The Small Village of Nonsan city and The Sacrificed in Korean War

I’d like to visit the biggest stone Buddha statue in Korea which is near my office.

I had planned to visit there for long time ago, but strangely enough it was not easy to visit a nearby place.
I think you would have experienced same case of me.

It was one and half years ago when I tried to visit the statue at first.

As entering into the small village of Nonsan city where the temple was, I could see a monument.

When getting closer to the monument, I acknowledged this monument for the sacrificed during the Korean War.

It was surprising for me that more than 1,000 people had been killed in this small village.

The names of the sacrificed were engraved on the back of the monument.

Next to the monument, there was a kind of eulogy for the
sacrificed.

Before looking at this stone, I didn’t think this place was a battle field.
I saw a big stone and I could find the traces of gun fire.

Alas, someone would’ve been killed in this place.
Korea is small country.
But whenever I have travelled, there were no place which had no sad story.

Sort:

Nice place...sad to know about the death of so many people. They will be remembered forever.

it is very true, @slowwalker, that things that are close to home and familiar are often taken for granted or overlooked.

You went to see a Buddhist statue and discovered instead a war memorial.

Korea is a small country that has sacrificed so much. When people talk about war, they list casualties, but when you stop to visit the places where killings occurred, you see only tragedy.

Buddha condemned killing or harming any living being but we haven't progressed far in the practice of mindfulness.

The loss of even one life should be a horror, let alone the loss of thousands.

I don't know if the majority of humanity will ever rise to the standard of respect for life, but I do know that hatred and prejudice distort peoples' minds and prevent them from seeing the truth.

As one poet said, human kind cannot bear very much reality.

A sad but profound meditation today, my friend.

It is sad to kill each other.
Which profit is bigger than the life?

Thank you for the post..

Fantastic photography! I hope to see more from you.

Love this place, wanna be there soon, love korea so much

Very touching. My condolences for all those killed. So sad what you wrote "whenever I travelled, there was no place which had no sad story."

May Peace come to Korea forever.

That bulletholes..

very good my friend...

Thank you for sharing , lovely shots , historical place and above all the Budha reminds me the monks meditating for endless hours to get some solace.

Korea is one of nation in my dream that I wish to come visit. Hope I can come to Korea.

Thank you for your post.

@slowwalker wow that crazy... must have had a real special feel about it. insane that you could still see the bullet-marks in the stone... just wow.

It is really sad to know that so many lives where lost

Wow amazing . . I like your post thankyou for sharing @slowwalker .

a great nation is a nation that loves the services of heroes, and you @slowwalker also have appreciated the heroes by visiting the village...

Hi @slowwalker, very great artcles, written in very simple description and awesome pictures I think that the holes are on the rock surface is bullet print.....

It is sad @slowwalker but I thankyou for sharing such stories and letting us feel the things we tend not to. When do we get to see Buddha ?

But finally you can also visit this place even though new @slowwalker you visit them right now. ;)
Each place has its own history and its own story too, but I really like your article, always tell you about the history, culture and more.

The traces of gun fire make me think of how many people were killed there my friend!
Some times, some places very near to us, we can't visit. Really very strange!

This is indeed a sad place, but a fitting memorial to the people who died here fighting for what they believe in. It is even sadder to realize that the world still has not learned from its mistakes. There is still hatred and misunderstandings that lead to war...

I really like your post, I will wait for your next post, because this post is very good

Visiting war memorials, small or big, is such a reminder of the senseless loss for causes that are always more complex than "good guys vs bad guys". This was sobering and saddening, @slowwalker. Thank you for sharing.

Any war story is a sad story because no matter what there is always loss of human life. It breaks my heart that there needs to be a memorial to mark the death of fellow humans.

Thanks for sharing!

Nice to meet you:) I'm Japanese Calligrapher Artist. I'm new here. the photo is very interesting.

I am very curious about korea. By the way, the photo is very impressive.

Very good my friend... great picture thank you for sharing

Have you been to the Nonsan strawberry festival?

Thanks for sharing this post. I have always been very much interested to visit Korea. I think it is so fascinating and the simple way you present an image that evocate a sad story, makes me reflect!

History is present even today, trough objects memory and it's physical effects remained after battles and wars.

It's good for us to remember about the ones who fought for us… to be grateful for our lives today!

p.s. I invite you also to enjoy my first giveaway, in my last post:) Two Nature Art accessories with Steemit Art logo!

Interesting and informative post. Yet it is a sad reminder that we humans have still not learnt from our mistakes.

There will be many more bullet holes and monuments in the future, because we aren't willing to learn.

Korea is one of my favourite dream to visit my friend @slowwalker

Great photo! Your culture is exciting! Thanks @slowwalker for the pleasure!

What a spectacular memorial! I love how they put the names of the fallen on it. It reminds me of when they put the names of the victims of 9/11 in bronze at a national museum in NY. What other memorials have you visited?

Congratulations @slowwalker!
