The Real King of England

in #history7 years ago

Royal wedding fever has taken over the weekend and with that in mind I thought I would right an article on the British Royalfamily. Despite how the British monarchy is presented in British society there is no natural route through family inheritance to the title of King or Queen. In fact throughout history the title has been exchanged through revolution acts of violence of religious issues. The first Norman King ,William the 1st in fact deposed the legitimate King at the time Harold.

The War of the Roses was an extended conflict between two families the House of York and the House of Lancaster. This conflict was a bloody affair that in fact influenced GRR Martin in creating some of the stories behind his "Song of Ice and Fire" novels. This conflict was eventually settled when Henry Tudor defeated Richard III at the battle of Bosworth Field. Henry's claim to the throne was somewhat limited by any standards being distantly related to Edward IV who himself was considered illegitimate.

There are numerous examples of other political and religious changes that have brought about new monarchs and new Royal houses but if we actually follow the rules who exactly would be King? First of all the title of King should be passed to the eldest male child of a monarch, failing that the next in line female child. If you apply these rules the actual King of England (not Scotland) would be the holder of the title Earl of Loudoun. The current Earl is Simon Abney-Hastings a resident of Melbourne Australia and supporter of an Australian republic.
