I had a great experience watching from close how the cannon is firing and marking noon. The person who fires the cannon is Alem Tutundžić. Until today, five cannons were used. I really recommend you to go and visit this place if you ever go to Zagreb.
Grič cannon fires every day marking noon since new year in 1877. which in the history helped the bell ringers in churches know when they have to start ringing the bell, at that time the cannon was located in the gymnasium in Gradec. Today, the cannon and the tower are located in Croatia, Zagreb. During WWI, the cannon wasn't firing because it was scaring the city officials and it was forgotten until 1928.
The legend says that one day the cannon scared of the Turks and their Sultan from the city.
Bela IV. was a Croatian and Hungarian king and while he was running away from Tatars. Gradec which is today a part of Zagreb, offered him a shelter to keep him safe. He was grateful and declared Gradec a free and independent city of the kingdom with the golden Bula in 1242. Also, he ordered that the city must build fortifications to defend themselves from the enemies and that's how the tower of Lotrščak was built. The tower was named by the bell which rang every day in the evening and the ringing meant that the city gates are closing and everyone who is outside of the gates won't be able to get inside until morning.
In the 17th century, the tower was used as a store warehouse, in the 19th century it was used a coffee palace, and that's also when the administration decided to get the cannon for the bell ringers.
I was in Zagreb once and I wanted to see Greč cannon but unfortunately I didn't have time. Great article, keep it up.
thanks!
