I would guess though that the AL is different. L itself is a semi-vowel, the E adds no vocal difference, but AL is vowel + L as consonant. Does that sound right?

Good one! In regards to "help". And um.. You could be right. Al and El could be different. I don't know for sure. But.. Al and El sound extremely similar to me. Especially if you try to mix the two, it's hard to explain.. But they have a very phonetically similar sound.
