Remains of ceramics can serve as an object for approximate dating of an ancient settlement even before the beginning of archaeological excavations. The color of ceramics is a characteristic feature of a particular period.
In the times of Kievan Rus, along with metallurgy, pottery was a very common type of craft. With the widespread use of pottery in everyday life, it was developed, both in towns and villages. All this contributed to the mass supply of clay products to the domestic market and a continuous increase in the range.
Pottery production on the expanses of my land is represented by a few remains of artisan workshops and a significant amount of ceramic material, both in the form of finished products and their fragments (dishes, tiles, tiles).
The kitchen, dining and packing products were produced. The usual glandular clay was used, only pots made of kaolin white clay were found in settlements of the 14th-17th centuries. During firing, glandular clay as a result of the conversion of iron to oxide, took a red or yellowish color. Black color, could result from adding coal to the clay. Potters rarely used pure clay in the production of tableware, because during firing it shrank and cracked. To this, clay straw, sawdust and sand were added to the clay.
Most pottery of the times of Kievan Rus is made on a potter's wheel. But, since the potter's wheels were made of wood, then the archaeological materials of what remains of their details on the territory of my land were not preserved.
Clay was a public material and for this reason everyone could dazzle and anneal for themselves all kinds of products needed in the household. Clay sinkers for fishing gear, spiral sprinklers and other small items were clinging.
