Very true! As of about a century ago, the KKK could rightly be described as the militant wing of the Democrat Party.

The change was a long time coming, and arguably was prompted by a large majority of black voters (at least in the free North) voting for Franklin Roosevelt to support the New Deal programs. It continued under Harry Truman, who ordered the armed forces desegregated, and led to a Democrat Party that was stuck together by an arms-length alliance until the 1960s.
