The Syrian war has been a slowly unfolding catastrophe. The country is in a deep crisis and many Syrians are war-weary. However, hope for a new beginning remains, although still distant. Despite the suffering of the past number of years, I hope that Syria is somehow able to rebuild itself, and regain a new sense of pride.
I've been very lucky to visit Syria before the war and terror started. I wanted to share a series of photos taken in Syria before the war to remind myself and everyone of a time when this country lived in peace and showcased its incredibly rich culture. Take a break from the bleak headlines and scroll around the country for a reminder of the beauty of this ancient pearl. Today part two.

Umayyad Mosque / Great Mosque of Damascus
One of the largest and oldest mosques in the world, the Ummayad Mosque is considered by some Muslims as one of the holiest places in Islam. The mosque also marks the beginning of significant protests related to the cival war. Some 50 worshipers gathered outside the complex and started demonstrations with pro-democracy slogans. The memories I have of this mosque, I will always cherish. The atmosphere in the courtyard is fantastic: bustling and full of life, however never intimidating or hectic. A true spiritual place. While the famous Umayyad Mosque in Aleppo (a UNESCO site) has been ruined in the war, its brother in Damascus survived thus far (being based in the capital strictly under the president's rule).
And boy, they do love their courtyards. This was the courtyard of my hotel:
And I have seen so many of these old cameras around the country, it was almost like one big museum... Back then I was not really into photography that much, but looking back at this gives me the chills.
Aleppo
Perhaps one of the most emotional stories can be told about Aleppo. According to some, it was 'one of the most beautiful cities in the world'. Truly elegant. Now, Aleppo has been blasted into ruins, being devastated by years of war. But for locals, the memory endures of a city that could be crowned as one of the true jewels of the Middle East. The old city contained beautiful architecture and entrances with fortified wooden doors. Aleppo drew visitors from all over the globe. And for a lot of reasons. While thinking about Aleppo, I get both angry and sad. You just cannot imagine how beautiful it was ...
It make me so sad thinking that all your photos are only a remember, thank you to give us to keep it in mind
I have friends from Allepo who lost everything in the war. They are one of the most down to earth people, friendly and always willing to help. They are presently refugees in Germany. They really miss home but a pity that they can't go back.
Syria is wonderful country, i hope war finish and syria back... arab republic of syria.
A very beautiful country her bad luck that is rich in natural resources. All Arab countries rich in natural resources have been subjugated by "American democracy"
Allah Please save us. We want peace. We don't want war.
People needs to open eyes and be against of this war.
Beauty the mosque 😍
we all pray for syria
Sad to see how some people can easily destroy everything, take human lifes, destroy property ... everything. Syria was a beautiful country. Hope this madness ends soon, so Syrians can live in piece and rebuild their beautiful homeland.
I’m so sad to see such beautiful place ruined by war.. :(
Aleppo is one of the best old cities in the world that holds a variety of beauty and history. In fact, some parts of the city's architecture was inaugurated as one of the world's cultural heritage unesco like Umayyad Mosque and hopefully one day I can worship in a magnificent mosque in umayyad. if only Aleppo is not destroyed, this city will surely be the destination of the largest religious tourism destination in the Middle East, Thanks @martinphoto very interesting writing
Upvote & Follow! Sad to see that a country rich with culture and nice old buildings gets destroyed like that. Best wishes from Germany!
I'm from Venezuela but my family is from Syria. My Grandmother use to tell me how was to live in Syria arround 60 years ago and how beautiful it was. They were 13 brothers and sisters and lived all together. She even narrated me the story of his Grandfather that returned walking to Syria from the WWI and became blind in the hole travel. She has been suffering since the begining of the war. No homeland to return. For me i just have this idea that i don't have traceable roots anymore. There was this tradition in the family, you had to go at least one time in your live to Syria to register yourself in the Family Tree. It's Impossible now, and the family tree may be lost by now. But the world keeps going, same as life. Maybe one day i could visit Syria even if it's not the same as in the past.
Thank you for sharing @martinphoto.
It is true the tragedies of recent years have left a poor impression in the minds of today's youth with regards to Syria. This is such an incredible shame given that Syria is one of the most beautiful countries with a deep and rich history of human heritage. It is of great cultural significance to millions around the world. Ancient sites of empires long gone lie ruined in the deserts to be rediscovered by future generations.
I very much enjoyed the tone of your post here, reminiscent and fond. I can tell you really enjoyed your trip around Syria. Hopefully this type of journey may be repeated again soon and Syria will see peace once more.
Everytime i hear about syrian war it breaks my heart. There is too much tragedy there. So many lives are being lost daily. It is really unfortunate.
Wars destory life:(

Syria is getting too much war. I think they should start thinking if war is a solution or just another crisis they need to survive.
It's so sad Allah bless him
From the pictures posted, I can attest to the fact that the town of Aleppo was truly beautiful and elegant.
Such beautiful photos, seeing them has made me sad though - all the country's history and heritage lost... If only I managed to visit before, though maybe I would just feel even sadder.
I can only hope that Syria can one day rebuild itself and hopefully attempt to restore what was lost!
God save you the Syrian Muslims. And stop the mosque attacks. And send peace to all the Muslims.
thanks for sharing ... we are barbarians
incredible photo and beautiful scenery.
and a very beautiful country that is rich in natural resources. But unfortunately the country has been ruined just for their personal sake.
Thanks for sharing these photos. It really is sad how humans can destroy such a beautiful country. I will pray for Syria.

Lets start from Vietnam and start counting. How many wars was USA involved in and how many countries have been destroyed. How much money did they cash from every war killing innocent people and stealing resources. But it is not their fault! It is our fault not to take action. A global revolution can end any war and start peace. The planet is still alive whether we live or die, but what about us! For how long will we live like Zombies? We dont want any more wars and blood. All we want is peace for us, for the animals and for earth.
Syria in the heart
LOVING THE PICTURES
life is so dificult
Absolutely despise what our western governments have done to this ancient and beautiful land. What have the Syrians ever done to us? When were the Syrians ever a threat to us? The people in the west have never wanted war with Syria, but the governments went and did it anyway. I hate them for this. I hate them for all their illegal and unnecessary wars.
Las personas en siria actualmente viven como pueden, tratando de que un ataque nos los mate, deben vivir bajo tierra sin quien les ayude practicamente.
The war and the great Western powers have stigmatized the peoples of the Middle East, the cradle of science, the first libraries and the first university in the world, The Madrasa of Qarawiyyin founded by Fatima al-Fihri in Morocco. Beautiful post. Congrats.
I am so sad about assad crimes in syria , syria has been destroyed but to build syeia again they need a lot of time and sources and working hard 😭
Its beautiful.
The architectural genius is amazing to look at! Such a shame it's now lost! You're so lucky to have seen it in its glory days!
Nice photos! The syrians deserve peace finally 😇
may the people who are victims of this war can find peace. i feel sorry for those kids i've seen in the news who are victims of this conflict, very depressing. very innocent.
I wish this never happened! I hope Syria gets back on their feet soon!😓
Nice photos :)
Great informative article, we muslims all around the world feel the sorrow of syrian brothers equally and pray to ALLAH that may Syria be saved and harmonized again and the war ends as soon as possible
It's such a beautiful place with unique culture and architecture. So sad to see it totally ruined.
Amazing Photos! Thank you for sharing them. It is a shame that such a beautiful place had to be a pawn in a bigger game. But it is lovely to see what it was like before the war. I am not sure if it is just me, or maybe because of my generation, or maybe even media portrayal of Syria now, but I do not remember seeing many photos of life before the war. I hope people remember it like this rather than what has been left.
