Hi people, today I bring you a post on a very interesting topic and is, basically, Eurocentrism in the Americas.
The republics of South America are a product and living testimony of Europe in America. Before knowing more about Eurocentrism, we must know how it is defined: the term Eurocentrism applies to any type of attitude, position or intellectual approach, historiographic and social evolution, which considers that Europe and its culture have been the center of civilization. This can be considered as a form of ethnocentrism.
The implantation of Eurocentrism in America was important because they brought different forms and regimes of government that had great impact in America. Also, from the fifteenth century, indigenous territories and nations were incorporated by the Spanish monarchy through the discovery and conquest of America, forming part of a mercantilism and giving rise to the Spanish empire on the continent.
In the course of world expansion and colonial domination by the dominant race itself, the same criterion of social classification was imposed on the entire world population on a global scale. As a consequence, new social identities were combined as successfully achieved in America, with a racist distribution of labor and forms of exploitation of colonial capitalism.
Eurocentrism generated negative consequences for the inhabitants of the continent, such as:
• Definitive loss of its sovereignty.
• Disappearance of many native languages.
• Destruction of cultural works.
• Inferiorization and contempt for the original cultures.
• Slavery (although some people already practiced it).
