Frankie Recovers And Becomes A Cowboy In Pecos County

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about one of the top Texas Rangers to ever wear the badge, the great Frank Hamer, who was brought out of retirement to take down Bonnie and Clyde.

In the last post Frankie was recovering at home and being nursed back to health by his mom.

Today's story

The family thought if McSween tried to kill Frankie once, he might try it again so they sent him and Harrison out West. For some reason McSween was never arrested for the shooting.

I think it was because there was no local Sheriff there at the time. I'm surprised they didn't go over to McSween's and kill him for trying to murder a 16 year old boy. But they didn't.

Frankie's dad knew a big rancher in Pecos County so it was arranged to have Frankie and Harrison go to work for him out there as soon as Frankie healed up enough. So that's what happened.

This is the Pecos River:

And here's the location of Pecos County:

But what's interesting is who the big rancher was. His name was Green Berry Ketchum. Has anyone ever heard of someone being named Green before? With a middle name of Berry? lol.

Well, anyway...if the name Ketchum sounds familiar it's because Green's brother was the notorious Wild West outlaw Black Jack Ketchum!

Here's Black Jack. He looks more like a banker:

So in order to keep Frankie safe he was staying with the brother of one of the most infamous robbers in the West. Not only that but his other brothers were also criminals.

I just thought that was interesting and you know that Frankie heard alot of stories about the Ketchum's and their robbery jobs.

Side note

Black Jack Ketchum was well known for holding up trains, banks, stage coaches and killing people. He was finally caught and hanged in 1901 but that made him even more famous because of the botched hanging job.

Yeah, the officials where he was hanged, Clayton, New Mexico, had never hung anyone before. They tested the scaffold and hung a 200 pound bag of sand the night before but they made two mistakes.

First off they left the bag attached to the rope all night and that made the rope super stiff, like wire. Then they had the length of the drop set at 7 feet...too long for someone of Black Jack's size.

Here they are putting the noose on Black Jack:

So when the hanging took place the rigid rope and the long length caused it to sever Black Jack's head clean off.

They said his head stayed in the black hood which was over his head and his body landed on his feet and stood there for awhile before collapsing.

Hey, they wanted to set an example for train robbers in the territory so in that way they succeeded. This became the most infamous hanging in the West.

By the way, Black Jack's last words were.."I’ll be in hell before you start breakfast, boys! Let her rip!"

Frankie's unorthodox education continues

Frankie's time in Pecos County was a tremendous learning experience. First of all, he heard all kinds of stories from Ketchum family members about how robbers pulled off their heists, how they thought and planned things.

This was inside knowledge that few people would ever hear.

Secondly, the ranch was huge...45,000 acres.. and he learned all about the vast territory of Pecos County riding those cattle herds. This would become priceless knowledge later in his career.

In the next post Frankie starts catching horse thieves on his own.

Thanks for reading folks.

PS- I've been finding fascinating wire sculptures since last week when I posted about them, here's another one.

This one either looks to me like someone yawning or else a Steemian who blew their mind trying to understand the hardforks!

I'm certainly not going to be breaking any laws in Clayton. LOL.

lol! Well hopefully they got better at their job but I agree, I still wouldn't want to be there!

I definitely love your stories

Thank you so much truelovemom, you are very kind!

That's a helluva execution! Damn! I can only imagine the response. "Welp, someone's gotta clean that up now."

lol! Yeah, any volunteers? lol. The place was super packed with people too because Black Jack was such a famous outlaw. People were fainting! lol.

Very interesting. Unsual story.

Howdy there twoitguys! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Well, the hanging may not have gone as planned, but I bet it was quick. I'm surprised they photographed the hanging, but I suppose they wanted something for the local paper.

Yes, actually they had several photos of the headless body from the newspapers! But I didn't want to create any controversy so I didn't load those. That place was packed because Black Jack was such a well known outlaw. I guess lots of people fainted!

Frankie learning first hand information on robbers and how they planned their robberies! I would say he got a good start in his career. He probably didn't realize that until he became a Ranger later.

Exactly sir Vincent! You are really paying attention for a change. lol..no seriously...he still thought he was going to be a preacher! lol.

Hey janton, isn't there a song about being green sang by the 'frog' from Sesame Street. My maiden name was green but I never thought of calling any of my children green, hahaha.

lol! I'm sure there is a song about it but I'm not very familiar with the Sesame Street songs! Yes, I've never heard of Green as a first name!

Parents have a lot to answer for, lol

yes, what were they thinking? lol.

Mornin’ Cowboy! The hanging of Black Jack was like something out of a horror movie and the wire sculpture looks like it just saw him being hanged!

haha! that's a good one redheadpei! I wish I would have thought of that!

Thank you so much ocdb!!

Wow, what a way to go out! Both the botched job and his last words. Always entertaining to stop by for a little story about the Wild West. Though I see yet again I have some catching up to do. ;)

lol! Yes he went out like he wanted to I guess! That's the problem with series, it's hard to keep up with them!

I love these history posts, @janton! How do you do most of your research? Great work! This was fascinating. So creepy about the botched hanging. 😱

Howdy jayna! Thanks so much for the kind words. The hanging was really bizarre! The place was packed out because he was such a famous outlaw. I guess there were alot of gasps from the audience and a few people fainted!

The way I do my research depends on the subject. I usually try to find a great historical account with tons of research and documentation that the author has done, almost all my stories are from exhaustively researched projects done by historians.

But I also use many state archive sites and historical society sites for more information and photos. In other words, I usually spend way too much time and it's not worth it so I may be backing off soon. lol.

Lovely countryside and river @janton highway robbers in days gone by, now referred to as politicians, pity the hangman's rope no longer services the trade, although this was the most unusual story I have heard!

lol! Howdy joanstewart! Laughing at your reference about the politicians, that is so true in most cases! I agree that capital punishment is a good deterrent and when the conviction is strong then punishment should be swift and execution by hanging might be an additional deterrent! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Sadly I don't believe there is any deterrent in the world today to stop the greed and stupidity one has to live with of late. Not even the hangman's noose puts them off, then I also don't agree with jail sentencing where tax payers have to feed, cloth and look after their medical needs either. We definitely have not learned from history, live each day as it comes, did enjoy your story so keep going strong!

You may be right about the deterrent, I haven't looked up any stats on that. It would be sad if people are so crazy or evil or have no conscience that there is no deterrent but maybe that's where we're at.

The costs of keeping prisoners is insane. My wife is a guard at the county jail and the money spent housing them is nuts! Thanks so much for your kind words!

hahahaha! The family sends a boy with moral super powers to live with an outlaw. This sure shows that destiny is a thing. Excellent work on a very interesting topic.

Howdy owasco! I thought that was so ironic! One of our best lawmen ever spent time living in a crime family's main headquarters basically. lol. Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoy this story.

Howdy sir jiirizarry! Thanks so much, I'm glad you like it. How are things there? Are you a native Puerto Rican?

Well hi there Mr. janton! You are very welcome. I really enjoy your stories. My parents are native Puerto Ricans, I was born in New York. We are better of than how we were two years ago after the hurricane but we haven't totally recovered yet. There is still a lot to repair and improve.

Howdy again sir jiirizarry! Well, it's been very frustrating to see the recovery and rebuilding moving at such a slow pace..and then to see the fiasco with the governor and all that mess, wow! Where did that guy go anyway?

I hope the new leadership can make better progress. Thanks for the kind words!

I heard he's in Georgia somewhere. The Secretaria of Justice took up governship and has been doing a good job so far. Thanks for your good wishes!

Oh that's good to hear! Too much corruption there, or there was anyway, had to help to get rid of some of the top people and I was so glad to see you guys demonstrating like crazy!
They knew they had to do something or you all were going to overthrow the whole place! The repairs and infrastructure restoration needs sped up before another hurricane hits!

Howdy Sir @janton, I bet those "expert" hangmen didn't sleep too well after witnessing their headless efforts at the job.
It seems that Frank's training continues in unexpected ways.
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! It would be interesting to be able to go back and read the old newspaper articles about that disaster and see what they have to say. I'm sure you are right though. I agree about Frank being trained too!

We have not been to the Pecos yet. That is one of the counties we have not visited yet. I always love to hear your stories of old, wild Texas.
Thank you for sharing these stories.
Ren

Howdy Ren! Texas has so many counties! I think that's the biggest one though, it's a pretty huge territory. Thanks for your kind words, that was a very colorful and formative period in our history and Frank really gets into some wild stuff in his career!

I was going to correct you and say Jeff Davis County was bigger, but it is only 2,265 square miles while Pecos County is a whopping 4,765 square miles! All of the counties in that area of Texas are huge anyway! It's ridiculous. There are 254 counties in Texas and we have visited 72.4% (184) of them. Most of them are out west. Just love it out there.

You can see where we have been in Texas and the rest of the US by visiting our website: http://crosscountytravelers.com/destinations/the-county-project/

Well, it seems like Frank was in a very good hands, lol. And that hanging incident!!! Oh my gosh! Again I had to laugh at something that in reality must of been a horrific scene! I wouldn't laugh if I was there, but I would never go to look at execution. Which back in the day was like an entertainment!

But you make sound everything funny, even that wire art, lol. I am not even trying to understand the hardforks, lol.

haha! Thanks Miss Lena, yes you are correct, people went to see hangings as entertainment which is hard to comprehend isn't it? They got more than they expected that day!

OMG! My stomach flipped when I read about Black Jack's hanging. Too much information for me!
Green Berry Ketchum sounds like greens and berries loaded with ketchup. LOL!
HAHAHAHA! Definitely a wire sculpture of a Steemian who blew their mind! Good one jonboy!

Oh! Sorry about that hanging thing. Most people are so caloused they thought it was funny. Yay! you're still up. Do you do alot of hyperlinks in your posts and where do you format your posts at, on steemit?

The reason I asked is because I can't get the link I put in today to take people to the link I inserted.

Oh, I am so sorry that I didn't see this sooner but I wouldn't be able to help you, as much as I would have wanted to. I only use hyperlinks for my sources. I am computer illiterate. Did you get it to work?

Howdy Butterfly! That's ok, I got help from melinda010100 and she told me how to do it, it's ridiculously easy once you see how it's done. lol. Even a computer dummy like me got it. How's it going this week?

Oh, good. I am glad she could help you. I wish I could help you one day.
This week is busy but going good. Thanks for asking. How is your week going?

Howdy today Butterfly! uh...my week....well, it can't get much better. Getting alot of work done around the property, the weather is finally cooling off this week..instead of 100 everyday it's 89 or low 90's so that helps alot. Into the 70's at night so the nights are wonderful.

You could help me but you probably wouldn't see it as helping me. lol. You could let smithlabs and I furnish some herbs to see if they help in that migraine situation and he could get you a used but much better computer too, for free! He's a computer expert too with dozens of old machines lying around. lol.

Email him sometime, he's just waiting to help and I'll pitch in if there's any cost. Other than that, staying in contact and being a friend is helping me!

I am happy to hear that your hot weather is cooling down for you. It will be 42 degrees Friday morning here! I had to put a pair of socks on last night and today. I almost cried. LOL!

Oh, my kind friend. I am having a hard enough time about letting smithlabs furnish the herbs, so their is no way I could ever accept a computer!!! You guys are the best and it warms my heart just knowing how much you both want to help. Your friendship is all I need sir @janton...to sir with love and hugs!
