Although I didn't use the link, @kingkutdabarber is right. It is one of the attributes/names of God in the Torah, used many times throughout. It is also usually used at the end of certain Hebrew words to connect a root word to God. Like in the words Yisrael, or Michael. You can learn about the meaning of that Name and Yisrael in this post I made a while ago... https://steemit.com/religion/@inphiknit/regarding-the-claim-that-israel-is-a-word-encoding-egyptian-gods-is-ra-el
I would not put the same meaning to that same sound or letter combination in english words like bible, elite, towel, vowel, hell, etc. Would have to examine them each individually... And careful not to confuse the el sound or suffix with the arabic al, which means "the," as in alchemy, or algebra.
Regarding the origin of the name, according to Judaism, it has always been one of God's names. (We're in the year 5777.) According to the story, all mankind knew God until a certain point where people starting worshipping representations of God, and eventually, going even lower, worshipping representations of individual forces of nature, or lower still... As various pantheons of idols grew in different regions around the world, the One Creator was relegated to One of many. If you look at wikipedia's post about the religions of the Canaanites, it says that; "El, also called 'Il or Elyon ("Most High"), generally considered leader of the pantheon." (Source.)
Although Created by God, Satan, also from the Torah, is of course, someone/thing else. (Though I don't deny that conspiracy theorists might claim any number of things...) Fun questions to explore though^^ If you want to chat sometime, you can PM me on steemit.chat, same name as here...
Hey.. Just wanted to let you know I read your response and will respond when I get a chance.. I'm overwhelmed with stuff and it's taking me a while.. But I also wanna try to get on steemit chat sometime soon. I've never used the chat yet and I'm not sure how to use it but another friend of mine wants me to try it out and chat with him on there too.. So.. I'll work on that soon and I'll respond to your message soon as well. Probably tomorrow.
Thanks for your thoughts btw!
No worries! Drop me a line anytime!
YW and have a good one :)
Well. I can't so easily accept that he is right as you can. In the articles I wrote, they stated that they don't know where it originated, they have theories, but they don't know. So.. I'll assume that your translation is probably the earliest and most reliably known source.
But.. I have a feeling it goes back even further, perhaps to languages lost to history.
In regards to al and el.. I appreciate your distinction, however the word you referenced was "the" and "el" is also "the" in Spanish.. Which evolved from latin, so.. You know.. I don't necessarily see a problem there at all, it fits. "The" is or can be a metaphor for God.
Also in regards to the Satanism confusion, I think they get this because a lot of secret society people believe in Lucifer, and.. I think the disconnect though is that they see Lucifer as a good guy who rebelled from the corrupt god and sometimes they also see him as the necessary dual dark part of god, as opposed to the Christians or conspiracy theorists types who see it all as like Satanic and evil.
Sorry for the super delayed response, and I still haven't tried steemit chat yet, but I hope to soon.
It's ok. I appreciate your taking the time to reply.
And I accept all your points, I just wanted to add our layer of understanding to your discussion.
