The grape had a very important meaning in ancient Greece and was on the daily menu and it was one of the nutrients that covered the daily needs and the grapes were used in many ways and were interesting as raw food or for the production of wine. Some are of the assumption that grapes were already growing on Greek soil in prehistoric times and the ancient Greeks were very progressive when it comes to cultivation and have developed various methods and through trade relations, the cultivation area was expanded more and more and also on the islands were grapes cultivated over the time and the ancient Greeks have stationed an example for the cultivation of which the people in other countries were also fascinated. To produce wine, the grapes were usually harvested in September and crushed in a large container and here various methods were used and traditionally the grapes were crushed with the help of human power and feet and this product was then left until it was fermented. Wine was one of the most important export goods of the Greeks and for transport there were special vessels and in ancient times wine was never drunk pure and usually mixed with water in a ratio of 1:1 and these mixing vessels were also known as craters.

Wine was drunk especially on ritual occasions and was closely associated with the god of wine Dionysus and his cult and ancient discoveries of painted ceramics show how important the consumption of wine was and was consumed at almost all festivities. Dionysus was also associated with the cultivation of this plant as the god of vegetation and as an equivalent of him in Roman mythology was also Bacchus known and he was also considered a sociable god who never drank alone and was always accompanied by the satyrs and around Dionysus, a huge cult was created which was full of mysteries and this was often associated with ecstasy or even madness and of all the cults that arose in ancient Greece, this was probably considered the one with the most mysteries and strange rituals. Also in art, Dionysus plays an important role and was typically represented together with grapes and in the visual arts, there are numerous works which are based on him or his cult and in art he was a typical symbol of fertility or joy and in general he was associated with sociability.
