Sultan Murat Hudavendigar's main target in Thrace was to take Edirne, who had a strategic prescription. Thanks to the conquests he had made in Trakya, a Byzantine aid to Edirne could be prevented. The Turkish troops commanded by Lala Sahin Pasha surrounded Edirne. Greek and Bulgarian forces were defeated in the conflict. The city, waiting to be helped for a while, had to surrender (1362).
