6 HISTORICAL MINISTS that you have always believed

in #histirical7 years ago

We live in the age of technology and inventions or scientific discoveries change what we thought or knew about the world. Here are some of the historical facts from school that have proven to be false:

  1. Napoleon and nose of the Sphinx

It is known that the Great Sphinx of Giza lacks the nose. Legend has it that Napoleon's army destroyed him during a battle with the Turks in 1798. However, the notes of a Danish traveler, Frederic Norden, show that the Sphinx had no nose since 1737.

  2. Van Gogh and his ear

The story that says the artist cut off his ear and sent it to her lover is pretty exaggerated. In fact, it all happened after a conflict with his friend Paul Gauguin, which Van Gogh attacked with a razor blade. In a remorse crisis (or, some scientists say, madness), Vincent cut off his ear lobe the same evening.

  3. Viking horns

We used to see Viking movies wearing horns, but archaeologists are still not really sure about the shape of their helmets in fact. Horned helmets were drawn on graves, and scientists believe they were used for rituals, not in battle. In addition, they are not specific to the Vikings, since the Bronze Age.

  4. Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of the most mysterious places in the world and new assumptions about it all the time. But he has not always shown that today - the restoration of the monument was started in 1901 by William Gowland.

  5. Discovering America

Historical textbooks say that America was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. However, the first Europeans who traveled to the New World were Vikings at the end of the 10th century.

Scottish poet James McPherson is renowned for translations of Ossian poems, a Celtic bard of the 3rd century. However, when asked to present manuscripts, McPherson escaped. They have not been found yet.
