WHAT IS THIS?

in #help5 years ago

I've seen them before, I just don't know what they are...

I found a couple of these crawling around on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico earlier. I've seen them on South Padre Island too, and they seem like friendly enough little creatures, I'm just not sure who they really are. Are they a type of little isopod or something? Does anyone know their common name or scientific name? If so, help a brother out and let me know.

That's a pretty cool name! Thanks! I'll take a peek

Certainly a Isopod. Fascinating animals - they are among the oldest life forms on earth, they are around for over 300 million years now. Way before the dinosaurs and all that. And there are 10,000 sub species (living in water and on land) so its not easy to know tham all... :)

Interesting bug! WAIT! You are down by the Gulf of Mexico? Work took you that far away from home?

Cool... Definitely an isopod. I believe it's Sea slater (Ligia oceanica). Similar to the very common littoral woodlouse (isopod crustacean). I'm far from an entomophile :-)
