I'm lucky, I was able to drop sugar (cold-turkey) 3 weeks ago with no follow-up cravings. But for a lot of people, quitting can be one hell of a struggle. Refined sugar is dangerous and deadly at the levels most of the developed world consumes it. If you look at heart disease in the US, it sky-rocketed when Americans bought into the idea of "fat bad, carbs good".

I stay away from sugar completely, if I want some sweets I go for rawfood cakes, or I use coconut sugar, maple cyrup, dates, agave and such.. Which is insanely much better for the tast buds but also for the overall health physically and mentally. White sugar is one of the worst thing ever!!!!
