Has your partner or roommate ever told you that you were talking in your sleep? Have they ever made fun of you by telling you the things you said while you were asleep? Sleep talking is a random occurrence and can happen to anyone.
Sleep talking is a kind of disruptive sleep disorder which is classified under parasomnias. It is medically known as somniloquy and falls under the same category as bed wetting and sleep walking. It is prevalent in children between the ages of 3-10, and experts estimate that about 5% of adults also sleep talk.
Intensity and frequency of sleep talking vary from person to person. Sleep talking may be unprovoked but can also be triggered when someone tries to have a conversation with you when you are asleep. Some people sleep talk once in a while, but to others sleep talking is a nightly habit. Sometimes sleep talkers talk in monotones and other times, they make full conversations without being totally conscious of it.
When Do We Sleep Talk?
Sleep talking mostly happens during two stages of sleep; Stage two and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Sleep talking during REM sleep may be a result of dreaming. Even when dreaming they may also say things that are totally unrelated to the dream. But sleep talking during stage two of the sleep cycle is totally unrelated to an actual dream.
What Causes Sleep Talking?
Sleep talking has not been exclusively associated with any disease condition, but the following factors can increase the chances of sleep talking.
- Alcohol- Taking alcohol before going to bed
- Certain Medications can keep the body in a state of unrest, and lead to sleep talking.
- Emotional Stress is a potent trigger of sleep talking
- Sleep apnea and other sleep problems
- Depression alters the mind and makes one soliloquize both consciously and while sleeping
- Lack of adequate sleep
- Fever associated with certain disease conditions
- Genetics
- REM sleep disorder
- External factors
Although sleep talking may be a genetically transferred character experts do not believe that genetics alone can be responsible for someone chitchatting during a night’s sleep. Sleep talking can also be a symptom of some medical and mental health conditions. If you are an adult who doesn’t have a history of sleep talking and all of a sudden you start talking in your sleep you need to visit a doctor to find out if it is an indicator of an underlying mental or physical health condition.
Does Sleep Talking Really Mean Anything
There is no need reading too much into the sleep talking words you or your partner utters in their sleep. Experts say that those words are most often meaningless and are not indicative of what the person is thinking. Some schools of thought believe that people reveal their secrets when they sleep talk but this is not totally accurate because the things people say in their sleep is hardly related to what is happening in their lives.
Also, sleep talking is very common amongst children; and according to experts it is associated with brain development and as the children grow they outgrow the habit.
Is there a Remedy?
There is no known medical cure for sleep talking. However, if you are feeling embarrassed about your sleep talking habit, some of these measures can help reduce the embarrassing occurrence.
- Maintain a regular bedtime and always get enough sleep.
- Avoid drinking alcohol and getting intoxicated
- Avoid eating heavy meals, especially before bedtime.
- Keep away from too much stress
Sleep talking is not a serious medical condition but if you feel concered rambling you may consult a sleep therapist.

Thanks :)
It's fascinating, isn't it?
There's still so much we don't know about ourselves. Why do we talk in our sleep? Why do we dream, and what do the dreams mean? Why do the majority of us respond similarly to certain stimuli, etc.
It's almost a good thing. It gives people like us the freedom to speculate, give our input, and share our thoughts on the unknown. If we knew it all, and had it all figured out, it wouldn't be any fun.
I know I went a bit off topic with my comment, but good write up. Always looking forward to when you post : )
Thanks for sharing :) and thank you much appreciated!
i used to date a girl that talked in her sleep, but what was weird was that the language clearly made say phonetic sense, but i could not recognise it atall !! Quite troubling when this happens as it really does not make sense ! nice post subject this post @road2wisdom )
hahaha that sounds scary lol
I'm a sleep talker... Sometimes I have full conversations with people and don't remember a single thing.
HAHA my brother when we were kids use to talk in his sleep and scare the crap out of me cause i could hear him in my room. lmao
My brother would always ask to borrow money. I guess I'm more generous when I'm unconscious lol
lol
Interesting! Thanks for the infos!
You are welcome @akhenaton🌞
I'm not sure if I talk in my sleep but i'm known to sprawl across the bed sometimes wake up on top of people!
hahaha @thehulk
This is interesting. My ex girlfriend would sometimes sit up and get a little combative in her sleep. She was a performer for Second City and it was a demanding schedule. I thought it was adorable, but also knew it might be messing with her sleep. I also heard it's best not to wake them. So it was just a matter of calming her down back to bed. Same went for my little brother as kids, he would straight up walk into other rooms and ask for things that made no sense, then he'd be back in bed. I won't go into our homelife then, but this article makes sense of that. Thank you for these little reminders for us all.
Yes that is true they say not to wake them, when my son wakes up I use a hypnotherapy move where I take his hand and gently pull it to his face and say sleep and he passes back out, but then again that can be used on someone awake too lol
Wow. I never thought of that. Sounds like magic. Are you magic young lady? I wouldn't be surprised. :)
heeeheee @jacobts hhaha I am just your average person nothing magical with me heee
silly :)
I saw your pic at an improv and I thought that was cool. Just wanted to mention that 🌞
thank god im dropping like a stone to bed ! ^^
Lol
Ti kanis? Esai kala?
Bsdjhflwsefscl [Talks rubbish in sleep :)]
🌞
I really do say those things in my sleep as I write them down on my phone in bed as a reminder ... (as well as to buy more eggs, milk and Steem etc etc!!) :)
This is a little off topic but my late father would dream of numbers and play them in the pick 3 lotto and he hit 3 times, granted he only won couple hundred dollars each time, but how do yo explain that? synchronicity? My late father didn't believe in coincidences and I tend to follow that thought process. RIght? I got something funny for you later hahaha
I always tell Steemians to keep a pad and paper by the bedside at night, as I can guarantee you'll always come up with some creative ideas that you can write down ... though maybe not the winning Lotto numbers! LOL!
I would expect nothing less of you @road2wisdom :)
Thanks for sharing this informative article with us.
Thanks for reading it :) @hammadakhtar
My Pleasure.
I once woke up a friend who then woke me up by having half a conversation in another language, so I can agree that it's funny! Great post :)
I often sleepwalk and sleeptalk at the same time.
Emotional stress is always the trigger.
Thanks for the read :)
You are welcome @creativesoul thanks for your input :)
First, I did enjoy more or less well researched posts, so yeah, I felt my time was well spent. That's answering the question at the end.
Second, I do have a sleep talker in my family. Glad I read this. I am always teased about the things I hear. No more! Counterattack is coming. =)
HAHA @snakiest yeah get em! lol
Do I have to both avoid drinking alcohol and avoid getting intoxicated? What if I just stop the getting intoxicated part. Can I still keep drinking?
STEEM On !!
Dave
lol both ;)
Interesting facts.
Thanks @gregbit
I have been a sleep giggler since childhood. I have an app on my phone now to record my sleep talking and laughing.
