This article will hit close to home for both men and women. For any red-blooded male, I believe this one essential component - his ability to get hard and stay hard - alone, will take him a long way towards satisfying his role of a protector, a role model, a lover and a companion.
But with all the easy, "drug" cure advertising you see nowadays (even from your MD!), the simplest and most effective nutrition solutions get downplayed completely. Let's correct that oversight tonight! Get to the grocery store after work and load up on as many of these life-nourishing foods that you can.
Let's begin.
1) Garlic
- There’s animal research suggesting that garlic can significantly increase testosterone levels, which is a necessary hormone for libido and erectile quality. Another benefit seen in studies with garlic is a reduction in inflammation, lowered blood pressure, and increased nitric oxide output. In fact, garlic directly activates the eNOS system of the human body, which is the nitric oxide synthase enzyme that triggers your body to produce nitric oxide, a molecule widening arteries and improving blood flow. Garlic consumption has also been shown in humans to be more potent at reducing blood pressure than most pharmaceutical solutions, needless to say, that this is beneficial for erectile quality, as high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of ED.
2) Citrus Fruits
- Citrus fruits are loaded with vitamin C and as you can see from the study above when combined with garlic they can provide very significant reductions in blood pressure, as well as increases in artery-relaxing nitric oxide. Citrus fruits are also a rich source of bioflavonoid quercetin which has been found to reliably increase arterial nitric oxide levels and reduce blood pressure. A study of 805 Finnish men aged between 65-84 years old actually showed that those men with the highest intake of flavonoids (including quercetin) were found to have a 68% smaller chance of dying from coronary heart disease (remember, a healthy vascular system is key for healthy erectile function). Another beneficial effect of quercetin is largely related to its ability to lower “bad” LDL-cholesterol while simultaneously increasing the “good” HDL-cholesterol.
3) Oysters
- The rumors say that Casanova ate 50 oysters for breakfast to keep his libido up, that might only be a legend, but there’s some truth to the aphrodisiac effect of this tasty seafood. There isn’t any research about oysters being an erection food that directly affects vascular function or blood flow, however, they’re packed with zinc, magnesium, selenium, copper, and vitamin D. All of which are crucial for healthy testosterone production. Testosterone is vital for erectile quality, in a way that without it, you wouldn’t desire any action in the first place.
4) Spinach
- Eating spinach, a green rich in appetite-suppressing compounds, can not only make you look better naked but increase blood flow below the belt. “Spinach is rich in magnesium, a mineral that decreases inflammation in blood vessels, increasing blood flow,” explains Cassie Bjork, RD, LD of Healthy Simple Life. “Increased blood flow drives blood to the extremities, which, like Viagra, can increase arousal and make things more pleasurable,” says Tammy Nelson Ph.D. Spinach is also rich in folate, which increases blood flow to the nether regions, helping to protect you against age-related sexual issues.
5) Coffee
- Recent University of Texas findings suggests that men who drink two to three cups of java a day—or 85 to 170 milligrams of caffeine from other beverages—are 42 percent less likely to have erectile dysfunction than those who consume up to seven milligrams of the stimulant daily. And those who throw back four to seven cups were 39 percent less likely to have the condition than their less jittery counterparts. The trend holds true among overweight, obese and hypertensive men, but not for those with diabetes, a condition that often causes the issue. So, how exactly does drinking coffee keep things going strong? The scientists say that the stimulant triggers a series of reactions in the body that ultimately increase blood flow south.
6) Bananas
- Hard men have healthy hearts, so eat bananas for potassium, which is great for your heart and circulation. Getting enough potassium helps keep your sodium levels under control, stopping your blood pressure from hitting the roof and reducing your risk of heart problems.
7) Dark Chocolate
- Dark Chocolate and raw cocoa are among the most nutritious foods around. And, they will also boost your erections and sexual performance. Dark chocolate contains epicatechins, flavonoids that trigger the release of dilating chemicals in the inner, or endothelial, layer of the arteries. How much should you munch? A University of California at San Francisco study shows that those who ate a 1.6-ounce dark-chocolate bar each day increased their blood-vessel dilation by more than 10 percent. While the study wasn't done specifically on erectile tissues, anything that benefits your body's endothelial system will likely benefit your erections, since the penis is made up largely of endothelial surfaces and keeping those surfaces healthy is crucial to good blood flow. Dark Chocolate and raw cacao products are also known for their ability to increase nitric oxide production, which also may explain why these super foods can have positive blood pressure lowering effects.
8) Pomegranates
- Pomegranate might just be the best erection boosting food ever. It’s also one of the best anti-oxidants around, protecting your body from free radicals and helping you age gracefully! As far as pomegranate’s erection enhancement properties, they are dure to the fruit’s beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system and testosterone production. Pomegranate has been shown to dramatically increase your body’s nitric oxide production, while it simultaneously protects existing nitric oxide from free radicals and oxidization.
9) Watermelon
- The sweet, thirst-quenching watermelon may give your sex life a lift a boost too. One compound in watermelon can have effects similar to ED drugs on your body’s blood vessels, and may even rev up your sex drive, studies say. While most of watermelon is water (duh), the rest is loaded with lycopene, an antioxidant that’s good for your heart, prostate, and skin.
10) Beets
- Beets are nothing short of a cardiovascular system super-hero, as they’re jam-packed with natural nitrates, compounds which convert to nitritines via the bacteria in your tongue, and eventually into nitric oxide in your gut. The more you consume nitrate-rich foods, the more nitric oxide gets released into your bloodstream, and luckily, beets are one of the foods with highest natural nitrate content. For this reason, beets are one of the best foods that improve erectile function. It’s no wonder that supplement industries have caught up to the benefits of beets and many now include beetroot extract in their pre-workout supplements. More nitric oxide -> increased blood flow -> better muscle pumps.
11) Hot Sauce
- How alpha are you? Well, how many shakes of hot sauce can you handle? A recent study from France found men who have a taste for spicy foods tend to have higher testosterone levels than those who can’t handle the heat. Of the 114 male participants surveyed, researchers saw a clear correlation between frequent hot-sauce usage and higher T-levels. Study authors suggest the findings may be due in part to capsaicin—the fiery compound in chili pepper that previous studies have associated with increased testosterone levels. In animal studies, capsaicin has also shown to increase the size of certain organs, while simultaneously decreasing belly fat.
12) Green Tea
- The brew is rich in compounds called Catechins, which have been shown to blast away belly fat and speed the liver’s capacity for turning fat into energy. But that’s not all: Catechins also boost desire by promoting blood flow to your nether region. “Catechins kill off free radicals that damage and inflame blood vessels, increasing their ability to transport blood,” says Cassie Bjork, RD, LD of Healthy Simple Life. “Catechins also cause blood vessel cells to release nitric oxide, which increases the size of the blood vessels, leading to improved blood flow,” she explains. Blood flow to the genitals = feeling of excitement, so sipping the stuff will, well, make you want to get it on. Bjork suggests drinking four cups a day to feel the full effects.
So there you have it! Most of these can easily be included or substituted into any diet/eating plan that you are on #12, #5 and #9 are a personal favorite. Gonna get me some of the others and start "hitting" the sack happy!:)
