Food addicts find themselves trapped in an obsession they can not control. When they are not eating, they are thinking about the next snack, experiencing cravings for certain types of foods.
There is compelling evidence that foods high in sugar, fat, and salt - like most junk foods - can cause the same chemical upsets in our brains that produce highly addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin. Like addictive drugs, highly palatable foods increase the production levels of brain chemicals that create well-being impression, such as dopamine. Once people experience pleasure, associated with increased dopamine in the reward circuit of the brain, when eating certain foods appears the need to eat more.
The signs of reward created by highly palatable foods can negate the signs of fulfillment and fulfillment. As a result, the addicted person continues to eat even when they are not hungry. Because they overeat, their reward circuit begins to get accustomed and respond less and less, causing the food to satisfy them less and encourage them to eat more and more to compensate. Basically, what they are looking for is to repeat the climax achieved in their previous gastronomic experiences: just the same as that seen in alcoholics and chronic drug addicts
The reasons for food addiction are not only psychiatric, there are also psicological reasons too. Some people who are addicted to food eat because they associate certain foods with well-being. We grow associating the food with the celebrations and special occasions of all type. Children can receive special food as a reward for good behavior. Adults can choose special foods to treat themselves for a variety of reasons.
People with normal weight may also have difficulty with food addiction. Their bodies can simply be programmed genetically to better handle the extra calories, or, they can increase their physical activity to compensate for the overfeeding.
