HONEY: features and uses

Hello steemians,
Today, I want us to look into this nature's natural sweetener, HONEY.

Honey is one of the products that are gotten from one of nature's chemist, the HONEY BEE, which through enzymes activities and dehydration are able to produce from nectar, a fascinating supersaturated food. Honey is one of the most used products around the world, and this is due to its wide range of applications which we would look into.

Features of honey

  • Honey is a viscous liquid with varying densities due to temperature and water content variations.
  • It has a varying colour ranging from colourless to dark brown.
  • It is hydroscopic in nature, meaning it has the ability to absorb moisture from the surroundings.
  • It contains mainly the monosaccharides, fructose and glucose.
  • It is acidic in nature with pH ranging from 3 to 4.

Uses of honey

  • As an additive to food, Honey serves as natural flavour booster, complimenting and enhancing varieties of food and flavours.
  • It contains carbohydrates which are the major source of energy for the body, and is thus, an energy booster.
  • Being an humectant, it attracts and retain moisture, thus when applied on the skin as a skincare or body moisturiser, it gives a natural glow.
  • It can also act as a cough suppressant by coating the throatand keeping it calm, thus relieving the irritation of the cough.
  • With the lots of antioxidants in honey, it is useful in helping the brains functioning and boosting the immune system.
  • With honey's antimicrobial (antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial) properties, its a good ointment for reducing allergies and curing eczema and acne.
  • The natural antibiotic nature of honey makes it useful in soothing and treating wounds and burns.
  • Honey has a characteristic tonic property that cleanses the arteries and bowels of impurities, also opening obstructions of the kidney, bladder and liver.
  • It can also serve as a preservative
  • Honey has been proven effective for stomach pains and gastric or peptic ulcers.
  • It is also a safe sweetener for diabetics, and people with heart diseases.

Though honey has a variety of healing effects, certain precautions must be taken, to prevent cases such as infant botulism in children below one year.

Conclusion

Honey is a food of great nutritional value. Although being characterised as an impure, supersaturated solution of sugar, the chemistry of honey is beyond that, and thus leaves it one of the most valuable food source, sweetener, and ointment.
