The Healthspring Code

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs,
but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”
THOMAS EDISON

For the better part of 45 years, I had rarely considered the healthy functioning of my body. It never crossed my mind to wonder about the mineral content in my diet or the health of my gastrointestional track. I seemed to be healthy. As healthy as anyone else in my family, as healthy as my friends. I ate food that tasted good in moderation, and I considered my work as a property investor to be sufficient exercise. I was busy - very busy - fueled by the engine of the property market. My stress levels were high but so were those of my colleagues and most other high earners in bustling Dublin, Ireland. This all seemed normal. I was living the status quo until my long-established paradigm began to unravel.Three events arrived in a cluster:

My father was diagnosed with cancer; my daughter’s dyslexia emerged; and I lost all my savings in the Irish property slump of 2007.

I woke up. I owed €2 million to the banks, and could no longer invest.

Now I look back and see it was the best thing that could have happened, because it sent me on a quest for a better way of living. I realized the way I’d been eating, drinking, cooking, thinking and even feeling, were setting me up to be susceptible to disease. I wanted to know could someone live disease free? And had anyone ever done that before?
That’s when I discovered the longevity nations. And that’s what led me to devising my own Healthspring Code.

We each have challenges particular to us as individuals. For instance, I am no stranger to dyslexia. For my whole life I have coped with dyslexia - which I now call my gift - finding through trial-and-error methods for overcoming the difficulties it presents. Only a few people in my inner circle know that I am dyslexic. SomehowI imagined it would be perceived as a weakness, so I hid it from the world. That is until my daughter was diagnosed at age nine. Seeing my daughter struggle with the same challenge forced me to examine dyslexia through a different lens. This time I was committed to investigating the reasons for its presentation.

I began to study the brain, learning it is fueled by nutrients and oxygen. It was then plain to me how much the food that we eat affects not only our physical health, but our mental functioning.

During the same period, my father was diagnosed with inoperable, terminal cancer. Before this he was in good health. Or what I perceived to be good health. He did not smoke, drank alcohol in moderation and was physically active. How could cancer be ravaging his body? Conventional medicine offered little explanation: The disease is random. Sometimes it can be triggered by a poor lifestyle or a hereditary disposition. But its true cause seems to elude the medical community.

These three events threw everything I thought I knew about my life and my longevity into question. I saw that whether it was dyslexia, cancer or stress, the common theme was that a better lifestyle and a clean diet could have improved the outcome. I wanted to know more. Before me lay a vast ocean of knowledge and ignorance. Where should my search begin?

I was a property investor, not a doctor, but my background gave me one distinct advantage against my adversary: I was a clean slate. I had no preconceived notions, and I was open to all possibilities. As my research commenced, I was overwhelmed by the infinite theories and endless information on the causes of disease. Thousands of diet plans claimed to cure illnesses of the body and the mind, but who was right? I would discover research that made sense and then find contradictory information. Clearly, I needed to look at the problem from an angle that no one else had. That’s when the proverbial light bulb switched on in my head. Are there communities in the world unaffected by disease? Indeed, there are!

The longevity nations, they are called. Pockets of them exist throughout the world in remote areas untouched by Western civilization. I decided to study them, concentrating on the Hunzakuts of the Himalayas. I examined their diet, lifestyle and environment. What makes them so different from us? I endeavoured to understand the human body and what it requires to operate in balance free from disease. I used myself as a guinea pig, undergoing blood, urine and saliva tests. I interviewed experts of “alternative” technology, and I put diet plans through different trials. The results were truly enlightening.

This book brings together all the best research on wellness, fulfillment, and longevity so others may be freed from the viscous cycle of disease. It sheds light on the current state of modern medicine, examines the longevity nations, explores nutrition for the brain and the importance of healthy water and organic food. I discuss the effect of toxins and stress in our environment as well as mineral and pH balance in the body.

The Healthspring Code is not a diet directed toward weight loss; however, one will lose weight naturally. The plan will also help those suffering from skin conditions, high and low blood pressure, high cholesterol, poor digestion, infertility, depression, allergies and a host of other ailments both common and uncommon. It is not a magic bullet but a gradual Code to restore the body’s balance, though I must stress that it is not a substitution for allopathic medicine. Modern medicine saves countless lives every day. It is there for us when we need it, and we would suffer without it. I am not suggesting we do away with healthcare as we know it, simply that we pre-empt doctors, drugs and hospitals by providing our bodies with the nutrients they require for optimum health.

How can we know the Healthspring Code works? After all, while I used myself as a guinea pig, I still have a way to go before I approach the end of my life. We won’t know the outcome of the experiment for a good long while, or it might come sooner than we think. What I do know is I am onto something. I am more resilient and more optimistic. I am confident I am on a path that will lead to better longevity as I continue to fine-tune my health practices. One immediate effect was my asthma, which simiply disappeared after a few years following the longevity diet. When in London I twice ended up in hospital on a nebuliser. Now When visiting a place with bad polution my chest still closes up and I cough, but I don’t need a Ventolin pump.

I know more lies ahead, that at some point the practices I am putting into place will converge to create a turbo-boost that will kick me up to a new optimum level of health, just as the longevity nations experienced. That is the unlocking of the Healthspring Code.

So many of us want the absolute answer, something conclusive, a Holy Grail of sorts. But the way I like to think about the Healthspring Code is that it is a method for collecting feedback about your health practices and improving the quality of your life. I encourage you to ease into the experiment, and I can tell you that if you do, you will earn the reward. If you want more energy, if you want to feel better, if you want to feel happier, embrace the practices which will assist you on your quest as you continue to try the little experiments with your own health.

For some, your current lifestyle or family arrangement may not be conducive to implementing all tools all at once. Your life partner may not be fully aligned, and it may be challenging to radically change your diet. You will have to decide how quickly to unlock the Healthspring Code. In each chapter, you’ll see Codebreaker breakout boxes, which are notes from my own experiments.
