First things first: I know at first hand. It's not easy to have a close friend or a relative who's diagnosed with cancer. But there is always hope. Not because one needs a miracle to beat cancer, but because cancer is ABSOLUTELY beatable, and there are numerous people around the world beating this goddamn disease day after day.
As you may already know, I have a great interest in healthy living and had written about it a while ago (it was a very long blog post, indeed)
This post mainly deals with PREVENTIVE Strategies based on SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH and FACTS. Having said that, there are almost 7.5 billion people on our planet, and we differ from each other when it comes to our bodies' reactions to these substances.
One substance can be beneficial for someone, but the same substance may harm another, especially those who are already on a medication.
As always, please...
FACT: Cancer has already been beaten a billion times in lab environment. Humans kill cancer cells day after day in laboratories.
But human body is a much bigger lab.
Nevertheless, the substances and supplements below show a potential for CANCER PREVENTION, FIGHTING AGAINST IT or SLOWING TUMOR GROWTH; and some of these substances are already being used in cancer treatment to an extent, with various methods. Some of theses substances might even become a definitive cancer therapy in the future.
ALWAYS CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR. YOUR HEALTH MATTERS.
SUPPLEMENTS and SUBSTANCES
With a promising anti-cancer potential
VITAMIN D
Not a "vitamin", but a hormone though...
Sunny regions of our planet have lower rates of cancer, and as the research suggests, VITAMIN D plays an important role in the proper functioning of immune system and cancer prevention. SUN itself doesn't produce VITAMIN D, but it activates a chemical reaction to produce it, so you should have the necessary substance in your body in the first place (and, of course, you will still need SUN LIGHT to have your body produce VITAMIN D).
VITAMIN D has a long half-life; i.e. Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) has a half life of approximately three weeks (meaning that the amount of the substance decreases by half at the end of this period in body stores). Though taking 2-3 pills a week with a dosage lower than 1000 IU seems like a good option to consider. Vitamin D is a very cheap supplement, and its easy to find. VITAMIN D is vital for a healthy body!

CURCUMIN
CURCUMIN, a substance naturally occuring in TURMERIC, offers promise. Turmeric, unfortunately, has significantly low amounts of "curcumin" by its weight (%2 - %5) so it would be a great idea to consume a "curcumin" supplement, a few pills a week ("Solgar" produces a highly bioavailable form of CURCUMIN) - Adding some delicious turmeric to your diet wouldn't hurt though. Curcumin acts through a multitude of mechanisms: It's an anti-inflammatory substance, a powerful antioxidant and it prevents formation of new blood vessels.

MELATONIN
As advertised as "nature's sleep hormone", Melatonin is a naturally secreted hormone by the Pineal Gland and this hormone is definitely one of the reasons why we call a good night's sleep "medicine".
There is an important problem though: Well, as you may have guessed, the source of the problem is us, humans. Melatonin can only be secreted in darkness, in total absence of light. So, in other words, if you're reading your favorite book on a smart phone at 2 AM or working through the night, "your SUN never sets". That could be a catchy phrase in a "think-positive" book, but the opposite happens here, there is a high chance that your body lacks Melatonin which has supports anti-tumor mechanisms. In this case, "The Dark Side" is a friend of yours.
If you're a "night owl", it may be a good idea to take 1-2 Melatonin pills a week. As always, keep the dosage low (high dosages surely have their own place in medicine but there are absurdly high dosages of Melatonin Supplements in the market. Keep it as low as 0.5mg - 1mg)

RESVERATROL
Resveratrol (an antioxidant found in the skin of various berries and grapes, and as you would expect, in red wine) has been studied for various diseases including Alzheimer's Disease and Atherosclerosis (plaque building-up in cardiovascular arteries). The research also suggests that it has encouraging effects on cancer cells, especially in breast cancer ("joint pain" is the most common side-effect but the its incidence is still very low among those who use resveratrol supplements)

CAROTENOIDS
The good old tomatoes and watermelons (or whatever is left from them)!
There are various Carotenoids (hundreds of them), but the most well known must be the "lycopene" of tomatoes and watermelons, a carotenoid that gives them their "red" color. Same goes for "Beta Carotene", responsible for the colors of carrots and apricots. Then we have "Astaxanthin", a powerful antioxidant which gives a "reddish" color to salmon (some suggest "Astaxanthin" should have its own credit in salmons' incredible ability to swim against the current) and lobsters.

ASTAXANTHIN
We have already seen Astaxanthin as a Carotenoid, but I think it deserves to have its own place in this list due to on-going research on Astaxanthin's anti-cancer properties, particularly in prostate cancer. Astaxanthin shows promise on decreasing tumor growth in prostate tissue and inhibiting the "5alpha-reductase" enzyme when combined with Saw Palmetto.

METFORMIN
Well, apparently, the classic "Type 2 Diabetes" drug has a side effect (among many), and in this special case, it's a side effect we would want to have. Even though we need more data on this issue, according to research, its usage is associated with a lower risk of cancer. Other than its encouraging anti-cancer properties, we'll hear Metformin's name frequently in the future in longevity and anti-aging studies too. It seems, CALORIC RESTRICTION is one of the key elements for longevity and a powerful immune system.

CHRYSIN
A relatively new kid on the block, found mainly in Propolis (bee glue) and Passiflora (as known as passion flowers), Chrysin promises potential as a cancer treatment. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects, and there is ongoing research on Chrysin's therapeutic effects on depression.

EPIGALLOCATECHIN GALLATE (Found mainly in GREEN TEA)
You're already a fan of Green Tea? Good.
If not, this may be a very good reason to start.
Green tea is already my favorite drink along with water. It makes me feel good, helps me to focus, and has a weird relaxation effect while still keeping me alert. Looks like a good deal, but there is much more: Epigallocatechin Gallate, found mainly in Green Tea, has promising anti-cancer benefits!

COENZYME Q10
Coenzyme Q10 naturally occurs in our bodies and plays a vital role in energy mechanisms (our cells need energy to "live"), but as we age, its plasma plasma concentration decreases gradually. Coenzyme Q10 is also found in fish and meat (though I'm a vegetarian so I prefer to eat parsleys, walnuts, peanuts and also take a few pills a week with a dose of 30mg) If you are on a statin drug, taking a few pills a week can be beneficial because research suggests that Coenzyme Q10 is beneficial for cardiovascular system and it can repair the negative side effects of these statin drugs (please consult this with your doctor first.) - Coenzyme Q10 improves survival rate up to %40 in cancer patients. CAT'S CLAW (Uncaria Tomentosa)
An antioxidant popular in South American traditional medicine, "cat's claw" has been widely used to treat diseases like arthritis (joint disorders like "gout disease") and digestive problems. It's a powerful antiinflammatory, has positive effects on cancer patients, and helps to repair DNA damage. "Cat's Claw" is widely available as supplements.

MILK THISTLE (Silybum / Silybum Marianum)
Milk Thistle herb has been used for its benefits as a "liver protector" (whether during chemotherapy or in the treatment of alcoholism). Silybum Marianum was also studied for Osteoporosis and shows promise. "Silymarin" is an ingredient found in Milk Thistle's seed, and "Silibinin", one of the constituents of "Silymarin", shows anti-cancer properties.

SOURSOP aka GRAVIOLA (Annona Muricata)
A tree autochthonous to Amazon territory, its leaves and fruit look encouraging in cancer treatment studies. There are testimonials who claim their PSA levels dropped significantly and tumors disappeared after using Graviola supplements for a period (Prostate Cancer). It seems Graviola is very effective in decreasing PSA levels and fighting with tumors in both benign and malignant prostate issues. Graviola also inhibits tumor growth in breast cancer. Looks promising.

REISHI Mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum)
"Tradition" is there for a reason (of course, this argument has its exceptions) - Reishi mushroom is very popular in China and has already been used in the treatment of various cancers with success, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. Reishi is also used for immune system enhancement and prostate health. "Ganoderma Lucidum" definitely deserves focus.

ASHWAGANDHA (Withania Somnifera)
Commonly known as ASHWAGANDHA, popular among ayurvedic medicine practitioners, "Withania Somnifera" has been studied for its anti-stress, antioxidant, immune-boosting, antiinflammatory, rejuvenating, mind-boosting , and anti-cancer activities. From mental health to physical performance, Ashwagandha looks like a "super-herb", but with a caution: Increased production of thyroid hormones reported in some cases as a side effect.

INOSITOL HEXAPHOSPHATE
INOSITOL HEXAPHOSPHATE is another promising substance in cancer research. INOSITOL HEXAPHOSPHATE's main dietary sources include nuts (including walnuts and peanuts), almonds, pumpkin seeds, tofu and sesame seeds. The studies include research in colon cancer, leukemia, prostate cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer. A diet rich in INOSITOL HEXAPHOSPHATE seems to have a preventive effect against kidney stones too.

SULFORAPHANE (mainly found in BROCCOLI)
Even if you had an excuse of your own to stay away from BROCCOLI up until now, the research you see below might be a very good reason to eliminate your excuse immediately:
Sulforaphane is a powerful cancer fighter!
Start eating broccoli! I chop broccoli into small pieces, add some yogurt and garlic juice, and eat it raw. Now, who says broccoli isn't delicious? It is, I mean it (and when it comes to health, it doesn't have to be delicious at all, right? The thing we call "taste" is nothing but an illusion. Remember that scene in Matrix?) - It depends on your country but "sulforaphane" is also widely available as a supplement.
But the magic of Broccoli doesn't end with "Sulforaphane". It also has a substance called "DIINDOLYLMETHANE" (also found in cabbage, cauliflower and brussel sprouts) which also fights against cancer and supports immune system. There is a reason why these foods are called "healthy". Add them to your diet!

PREVENTIVE DIET AGAINST CANCER...
"NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS HEALTHY FEELS"
It's no secret: DIET plays a vital role in health and prevention of diseases, WE ARE WHAT WE EAT! What we eat matters a lot!
There are already more than enough carcinogens in our daily meals and lives no matter what we eat, thanks to our harmful agricultural practices (we live on a planet where a true evil like Monsanto is the "good guy") and lifestyles.
So, prefer the lesser of two evils, and stop consuming junk foods which already proved to be harmful for our bodies, especially when it comes to cancer. Support your body's functions with the healthy food you eat. Help your body along the way, don't do the opposite. It will worth it in the long run.
Remember:
-"NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS HEALTHY FEELS"
-Quote from the documentary, "What The Health"
-
Stay away from processed foods: This is already a scientific fact, these so-called "foods" are making you and your beloved ones sick. From diabetes to cancer and cardiovascular diseases, they pave the way to various illnesses.
-
Eating SALAMI, PASTRAMI, BACON, SAUSAGE and all kinds of processed meats increase the risk of CANCER dramatically. And this also includes RED MEAT, as you may have guessed. Red meat is already harmful to your body, no matter how it is produced, let alone the fact that the usage of antibiotics in the process of producing these meats (both red meat or white meat) kills your friendly gut bacteria! If you're a regular "meat eater", then it means you're consuming ANTIBIOTICS (and god knows what else) REGULARLY. Would you take the risk? It's a proven fact. Looks like an easy decision, don't you think so? And you may even save a few earthlings along the way!

Stay away from carbonated drinks: There are a lot of "junk food", and there are a lot of "junk beverages" - Science says there is a link between carbonated drinks and cancer, especially esophageal cancer:
-
Stay away from processed sweets and snack foods: Have you ever read the "ingredients"? Anything looks familiar there? No. "They" only care about shelf life and profits, and will do anything to earn more. These type of junk mostly include high amounts of processed fats and sugars, and lots of DANGEROUS chemicals to prolong their shelf life.
-
Stay away from fried foods: Heating oils is NEVER a good idea. This practice generates a lot of carcinogenic substances during the process, and when you consume them, you increase the risk, especially for laryngeal cancer and prostate cancer.
-
Eliminate alcohol and smoking: I remember my own days of smoking water pipe for HOURS (It has been a VERY long time). The best way to reduce the risk is to eliminate these completely. If you smoke, or drink alcoholic beverages regularly, you have a higher risk for developing cancer. Don't take this risk, it doesn't worth it. There are healthier ways to relax.

Eat allium vegetables (onions and garlic): Yes, they smell and it may not be a good idea to eat these before a meeting. But without a doubt, they are healthy. Consume them raw if you have a day off (home-made yogurt with garlic and cucumbers is a great option - looks like we have a "Tzatziki") - Allium vegetables also have benefits for cardivascular system.

-
Eat colorful vegetables and fruits: Eat your colorful veggies and fruits. When it comes to fruits, prefer the ones with less sugar. Avoiding fruit juices may be a good idea to prevent excessive sugar intake. As we've discussed earlier, cruciferous vegetables like brocccoli, brussel sprout, cabbage and cauliflower have encouraging anti-cancer properties.

Home-made YOGURT AND PROBIOTICS are your friend: Research suggests home-made yogurt decreases the risk of colorectal cancer and has a protective effect. Make your own yogurt, it's easy once you get used to the process. It's a probiotic and supports the friendly bacteria, which is VITAL for health. TAKE CARE OF YOUR INTESTINE (Industrial yogurt doesn't have this effect, don't ever waste your money on it)

Drink your green tea: Make drinking green tea a regular habit. It has a powerful catechin called EPIGALLOCATECHIN GALLATE which is a powerful cancer fighter.
Go organic, and enjoy various types of green tea.

Citrus fruits can help: Adding some lemon juice to your glass of water looks like a good idea (there are also studies suggesting that lemon peels have anti-cancer abilities). In this case, the sourer the better. I prefer lemons over oranges because of oranges' high sugar content. Lemon also helps lowering high blood pressure.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES / RISK FACTORS
-
Lose weight: No matter the reason (hormonal imbalances, lack of movement, diet, or a combination of all these factors), extra weight doesn't help. It not only increases the risk for cancer but also has the potential to invite many serious diseases, including high blood pressure (which is a very insidious disease and triggers many others including atherosclerosis), cardivascular problems and diabetes.

MOVE! Excercise is medicine: Our ancestors had always been moving for thousands of years. Whether it be for running from an animal or running after an "enemy", their bodies had been working like a clock. Human body loves movement. Human body enjoyed "movement" for thousands of years.
Then, the "enemy" changed, and we found ourselves in our offices. Our body didn't love it. Research says that those who regularly exercise have a lower risk for diseases, including various cancer types.

Can you do a "plank" for 36 minutes?
This 72 year old woman can! (my own personal record is 6-7 minutes)
The record is already beaten, but it's still a very good lesson on the importance of regular exercise and what it is capable of doing to our health.

Sleep well for your health: It's not an option, but a must for your overall health. A good night's sleep is vital for immune system and vitality. As we've discussed when examining "MELATONIN" (a hormone secreted by "Pineal Gland"), we need daylight in the morning and darkness in the night for an optimal sleep cycle which is regulated by melatonin itself. Research suggests that lack of melatonin means trouble. Melatonin can only be secreted in darkness which lacks in our lives thanks to all these "screens" we keep staring. Blind people have a lower risk of cancer which may be related to unsupppressed melatonin.

Your BREATH, is your life: We cannot live without breathing. We can live without foods and drinks for a few days (i.e. Gandhi survived 3 weeks), but most of us would die in just 2, 3 or 4 minutes without breathing. Despite its vital importance, unfortunately, we mostly don't know how to breathe correctly which is very important for both MENTAL and PSYCHICAL health. One should breathe in from the nose, and breathe out from the nose again. Breathing through mouth is bad practice and harmful to health in the long run. If you have been mouth breathing for a long time, it may seem difficult to change this habit at first, but I'll guarantee that it will worth the effort. Mouth breathing invites many diseases, and triggers dental problems. And its worth noting that we have hairs in our nose for a reason.
"Diaphragmatic breathing" is the correct form of breathing (as opposed to chest breathing), and it helps using your entire lung capacity and should become a habit.
i get the logic in Hippocrates statement. . dietary risk factors are enormous and spans myriad of diseases...
Preventive strategies surely don't guarantee a cancer free life, but I think we should do our best and consider these scientifically proven practices. :)
yes very true...that you do all these thibgs doesnt guarantee a no cancer state.it however reduces its possibility.and most of these preventive strategies dont cost a fortune
nice post

Thank you for this extensive post! I'd say I concur pretty much save for the garlic part. I've watched some vids saying it is not a food and that it should be avoided. Come to think of it, maybe there's a reason it smells / tastes the way it does. And maybe there's something to it that in the Dracula myth the vampires hate it like poison... Or is it all conspiratarded – have you looked into it? Cheers
As far as I know, "garlic" is very healthy (and I eat a lot if I have a day off; you know, it smells a lot no matter what you do)... Coming to the vampire stories, I think it should be related with Garlic's "anti parasite" abilities. After all, vampires are "parasites" that consume their victims blood, right? :)

This is scientific research, friends... Of course, "scientific facts" might change in time, but at least for now, these are our facts based on scientific research.
