Studies have shown that it's easier to replace a habit with another one rather than quit and do nothing else about it.

What you recommend it totally effective. It just takes time for the brain to hardwire the new neural connections for the new behavior you are trying to implement.

Another thing that is key to quitting smoking is not to escape everything that reminds you of our makes you want to smoke but learn how to let the wish go by. If you wait a bit after the desire to smoke arises chances are it will disappear.

Education and awareness about smoking is also key. There are way so many myths around it that makes it even more difficult for people to quit.
