BCAA's! The Secret To Saving Muscle As You Grow Old

in #health7 years ago (edited)

This supplement has helped my elderly clients so much, I cannot recommend this enough.

I'll be explaining what BCAA's are and why they are important. But if you couldn't be bothered to read the whole thing, have faith in me. Buy some (the flavours are actually pretty good). Have 1 serve every morning and every night after your 45th birthday and you will reduce age related muscle loss (sarcopenia). Also, sipping it during exercise improves muscle recovery.

Branched Chain Amino Acids

A dietary supplement powder that is added to water and drank. It provides your body with three very important amino acids. Amino acids are the beads that make up a protein.

There are however three special types of amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine. These are called branched chain amino acids, or BCAAs.

Leucine

Isoleucine

Valine

BCAA's are a lot more versatile than normal amino acids. They can be converted into other amino acids and directly stimulate growth in muscle cells.

Once you hit 30/35 years old your body slows down noticeably, especially if you don't exercise regularly. This is because skeletal muscle loses it's sensitivity to anabolic (growth) stimuli as it ages. The stimuli includes insulin and amino acids as well as exercise in general.

You're body just doesn't adapt as fast as it use to. For those who do exercise regularly, it can be disappointing to see their hard work in the gym go unrewarded. Of coarse this doesn't mean your time in the gym is wasted as you grow older.

This is why I have so much respect for my older clients.

Getting you're daily dose of BCAAs is so important as you get older. It ensure's your body is being provided enough building blocks to make new muscle and repair the old.

Foods high in BCAAs

Foods that are high in BCAAs are your general high protein foods. Think meats, eggs, nuts, beans, legumes, quinoa... The list goes on.

If you are exercising for high performance, or are growing old, I strongly recommend finding a BCAA supplement. This way you can ensure your body is receiving the critical protein it needs. Also as we grow old eating large quantities of meat can become exhausting on the stomach and digestive system.

I hope this helped someone better understand amino acids and their important in the gym! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

All the best, harrynewman
