Are You Mercury Poisoned? Signs and Symptoms to Watch For!

As we continue our in depth look at the element mercury and how it negatively impacts health, we want to help people identify if they are experiencing poisoning by this heavy metal.



Our previous post on this issue discussed the very common dental practice of using mercury in amalgam fillings, which is now one of the biggest if not the biggest threat to health and a huge source of exposure for millions of people. Other sources of mercury exposure can come from coal mining, all seafood (fish, shellfish, supplements, etc) in the form of methylmercury, some meats and dairy if the animal was fed contaminated grains, household objects like light bulbs and thermometers, some food additives, vaccinations and prescription drugs, fetal and postpartum exposure via mother, and last but not least our water and air supply.

Now let's take a look at some of the signs and symptoms of mercury toxicity to clue you in on potential issues you might be facing. 


How you are affected depends on how you were poisoned. An acute case of mercury poisoning via vapors will cause different issues versus prolonged exposure via a food or dental source.  With that said, please keep in mind that mercury can adversely hinder so many of the different body systems that not all people will experience all or any of the same symptoms. 

Unfortunately, this is part of the reason it is hard for people with mercury toxicity to be taken seriously via the mainstream medical community, because when you express distress with more than one body system at a time you are often considered a hypochondriac or told it is psychosomatic.

As you can clearly see, mercury can have devastating effects on health; the damage depends on length and type of exposure.

When I was a kid a thermometer broke in my mouth and I swallowed a load of mercury - I remember that the xrays from the hospital were very cool, showing all the little dots going down my digestive tract. I think the mercury in thermometers has a protective coating on it. But all the same, next time I'm irritable this seems like a good excuse.

I highly suggest you look into detoxing mercury from your body. If you don't activly try to remove it then it is still there even from when you were a kid, and if you have kids or are planning on it then they will get some of that as well. Best wishes :-)

Yes, @kate-m do some research on detoxing mercury! It accumulates in the body unless you take intentional steps to flush it out. To our knowledge, there is not a protective coating on mercury in thermometers.

Organomercury compounds are really extremely toxic
The famous tragedy was Karen Wetterhahn spilling a few drops of dimethyl mercury on the latex gloves, though immediately removed but still lead to her death after few months.
Handling mercury containing compounds are obviously troublesome which arise when you try to dispose them.

Yes it is well documented that mercury is toxic to human health. It's important that we talk about this so people can protect their health and limit exposure!

Another event was on miniamata in japan, where merury poisoning was from eating fish or something..

It is very difficult to detox mercury from the body.

It is VERY difficult but VERY dangerous to not detox. Detox is almost as important as stopping any further contamination.

With that being said we do know people who have detoxed mercury before and been tested. So maybe you are somehow still getting exposure from sea food or something.

Yes it is unfortunate. I dont eat much seafood and have no mercury in my mouth. If I find anything that does work I will let you know.

It can be a lengthy process yes. This is why it's all the more important to take the vital nutrient IODINE.
The body requires this element to carry out it's basic operations, AND it detoxes mercury!! Nascent iodine is a really valuable supplement for everyone to consider, not just those who have been exposed to mercury.

Thank you for your response. From my personal experience Iodine (nascent) has not supported my mercury detox which has led me down the rabbit hole. There is research showing that magnetic therapy and detoxifying agents are needed. Otherwise the body moves the mercury around. 😀

Do you currently have dental amalgams in your mouth? Have you ever had some in the past.

I haven't read this particular article I've linked below but I've read a lot information on the subject of MS and its possible link to mercury poisoning.

@teamsteem Thank you for this information. This is exactly right, I have heard of many neurodegenerative disorders being linked to heavy metal poisoning like MS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Autism, etc. Here is a doctor that cured her own MS by detoxing and changing her diet to get what her body was missing.

Wow! First I've heard that. Yes I have silver fillings and also a silver dental bar which has been in there for over 10 years. Thanks for this info I'm going to research some more and probably have them out.

If you do have them removed which I do recommend, you really need to make it done safely. I have had many amalgams removed myself.

Failure to have them safely removed can cause some serious complication while having them removed safely has a very low risk of complication.

Please look into nascent iodine as well, it is a super vital nutrient that everyone is supposed to be consuming anyway, plus it detoxes heavy metals.

I also just remembered today that I smashed a mercury light bulb in a confined space (wardrobe) by accident a few months ago :O it's all starting to make sense!!

This is a detailed outline of mercury poisoning however I think it's important that improper nutrition, a lack of exercise and an irregular sleep pattern can cause many of the symptoms listed and improving in those areas is step one. Followed by being tested for mercury poisoning.

Basic & accessible investments in health like improving nutrition, hydration, rest, and breathing properly will make vast improvements in one's existence and enjoyment of life in every case of disease. All of the body's systems are improved, and the body is more capable of maintaining health even when exposed to toxins.

Thanks, these days i use iodine salt when boiling my potatoes and i eat extra magnesium, i feel a lot better than before, not sure if i have had mercury poisoning or just magnesium deficiancy, but feels better knowing how to treat these issues :)

Yes it's definitely important to be educated on the issues so you can take preventative steps to protect & maintain health.

About iodized salt: it's not an optimal form of iodine, and you're shorting your body significantly if that is the only source of iodine you are depending on. In fact, it is not even iodine but iodiDe with a "d" that is added to that salt, and mounting evidence shows that the body doesn't even absorb that efficiently. Plus, it's processed with other chemical toxins.

You might get the bare minimum requirement to prevent enlargement of the thyroid (goiter) from that salt, but that is nowhere near what the human body actually needs for real health. This is a really important issue as well, and many people have been misled about their iodine needs as well as how much they get.

One of the properties of iodine is detoxing halogens & heavy metals, so it is no surprise that we are seeing a huge iodine deficiency in the population correspond to a huge rise in toxicity.

People always say that fish are healthy. Yes, of course. We have to have them in our diet, but it's important where they come from. Fishes are great source of omega-3 acids and other important microelements, but unfortunately they contain also mercury really often. We must be carefull.

You can get omega 3 and omega 6 from plants as well. I take a supplement each day called Body Bio oil. It is rich in both but make from safflower and sunflowers.

If you read my post on Lambs Quarter you would find that lambs quarter is VERY RICH in both omeg3 and omega6 fatty acids!

This is a valuable point. The oceans have been poisoned, and humans may expose themselves to toxic levels of mercury by consuming seafood. There are usually safer sources for the nutrients found in seafood.

Everybody understand that this don't apply to vaccins (sarcasm AF)
