3 DAILY SUPPLEMENTS YOU MUST HAVE

Everyone has a medicine cabinet in their home, but most probably don’t look like mine. As a chiropractor living the “chiropractic lifestyle,” I recognize the benefits of eating healthy, exercising, and proper sleep amongst many others. I literally have ZERO medications in my cabinet, because I learned natural alternatives to combat the most common symptoms. My ultimate goal, however, is to prevent those symptoms from ever happening in the first place. My first recommendation to my patients is to maintain a healthy nervous system by staying well adjusted. My second is eat organic, healthy foods. My third is supplement the things that are difficult to get enough of. Below are my top 3 supplements that I recommend every person to start with. These are the exact ones that I use, but be sure to do your research to make sure they are right for you. Consult your MD if necessary before starting on any supplements.

Vitamin D3

This is sometimes called the “sunshine” vitamin because the body makes this when your skin is exposed to sunshine. This one is on top of my list because of how important it is for your immune system, metabolic reactions, and bone health. According to one study, “Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased risks of deadly cancers, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and type 1 diabetes mellitus.”Vitamin D3 deficiency is well know to cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. While this usually means general joint paint, the effects on the spine can also be quite severe. As a chiropractor, I want to do everything I can to keep my patients spine healthy! Tired of getting the flu every year? It is possible that by simply supplementing with Vitamin D3 will help you and your family stay healthy! Not only are there measurable physiological changes, Vitamin D3 supplementation can also also psychological disorders as well. One study found that when supplemented with high doses of Vitamin D3, symptoms of depression were significantly improved. There are 1000’s of brands and types, but the one below is my favorite, and typically the bottle will last a whole year for you and your family!

Cod Liver Oil

This is the anti-inflammatory juggernaut. If you look at the state of health in America today, most diseases and illness are preventable and most are caused by inflammation. In the “On Demand” economy (and mindset), fast food has taken over the typical American diet. Fish typically isn’t on the menu, therefore Americans are dramatically deficiency in nutrients coming from fish. While it is a healthy source of vitamin D, the main ingredients I am interested in are the fatty acids. I am positive you have heard of Omega 3’s, but most people haven’t heard of Omega 6’s. Put very simply, Omega 3’s are anti-inflammatory, Omega 6’s are pro-inflammatory. The ideal ratio 1:1 to 1:4, but the average American ratio is 1:10! This the main reason why 45% of all American’s have at least one chronic disease and why 7 out of every 10 deaths is due to a chronic disease. While there are many other factors contributing to poor health (lack of exercise, chiropractic care, etc), inflammation is the major culprit. If there was only one supplement I could choose to reduce inflammation (in kids or adults) it is cod liver oil. Below is my favorite brand and very rarely (if ever) do I get fishy burps when using this specific fish oil. One also really unique thing about this brand is won’t ever go bad because of the fermentation process involved.

Probiotic

Finally, we come to probiotics on my must have” list. Most of you have probably heard of this supplement, but I want you to really understand how important healthy gut flora is for you. Before we get there, however, we have to start from the beginning–where do we get our first dose of probiotics? The answer is the vaginal canal during the birth process. the unfortunate thing is that 1:3 births in America are c-section births! The next opportunity is through the breast milk. While there is a big movement for breast feeding today, many moms still opt out. As the babies grow into toddler and adults, they (and we) should be getting them through fermented foods such as sourkrout, pickles, kombucha, pickled veggies, kefir, organic yogurt, etc. but most people aren’t eating enough for proper gut health. This is one of the main reasons why immune, psychiatric, hormonal, and digestive illness plague our nation (and are rising at an alarming rate!). So, my first suggestion would be to eat healthier, probiotic foods, but you will likely need to supplement at first to heal the gut. When it comes to probiotics, however, there are millions of choices (and I have tried lots of brands). The key to picking the right one is the delivery system and the presence of fillers. Lovebug probiotics has the right strains as well as an effective delivery system and no fillers. They also have formulas for the little ones (super effective for colic, gas, constipation, and acid reflux).

Conclusion
I see a lot of people everyday–including runny nosed, coughing, sneezing kids, which is why I get adjusted every week for immune support and optimal nervous system performance. My next line of defense is the 3 supplements I mentioned above. They can be increased when fighting something off as well! I hope you learned a lot and it is useful to you. If you are not already a patient of mine, I would love to help you with your first line of defense with chiropractic. If you aren’t in my area send me an email and I can find someone near you!
