Onsen is more than just a bath- it is also a cleansing ritual way to restore your body, soul and spirit. Onsen in Japan are usually located where there is a natural mineral rich hot spring. Minerals have many wonderful properties that can revitalize you! Mineral baths may benefit the endocrine system as well, simply by allowing the body to fully relax over a period of time. The adrenal glands produce stress hormones such as adrenaline. Under conditions of chronic stress, they work overtime, which throws the endocrine system out of balance. By soaking away stress the workload of the adrenal glands is decreased, restoring balance to the endocrine system. With this, I would add that herbs such as Cannabis would prove beneficial with your Onsen
So, what do you do if you are not located close to a mineral-rich hot spring? You can to a degree do this at home provided you make the time to properly do it. Yes, I get it- easier said than done. To that, you must tell the myriad of voices and calls upon your life to just take a back seat for an hour or two. Your health is vitally important and needs to take first place some of the time!
FIRST PREPAIR
- Mineral-rich salt
- Essential oils- make sure that they are pure essential oils and not perfume oil. There is a BIG difference- Essential oils are natural oils and not chemically created as with Perfume oils. Don’t get me started on the chemical poisons…

- Skin brush for brushing your skin- start from your feet and brush upward toward your heart. Continue to do this brushing all over your body- it stimulates the lymph. You should be a nice shade of pink- don’t over do it though.
- Pre wash- wash yourself before you bath- very important. The bath is for relaxing not cleaning yourself
- Fill the tub with HOT water- hot to your tolerance
- Put in the salt- therapeutic amount could be up to half a bag depending on the size of the bag
- Add your essential oils 5 to 10 drops you don't need much with an essential oil
- Water- you need to hydrate while in the bath
- Cannabis- Indica dominant strain Barneys farm Pineapple chunk with its 80/20 Indica/Sativa ratio is wonderful for this especially if you are very stressed out and are having a hard time relaxing or sleeping.

Post bath it is important to stay in your relaxed state as much as possible, continue to hydrate. I like to have green tea and listen to calming music- Shakuhachi or native American flute.
Onsen for me is minimum once a month and more if I am under stress. The important thing to remember is to take time for yourself, to rejuvenate and refresh.
