Can You Die of a Broken Heart?

in #health7 years ago (edited)

Songwriters and poets grieve the loss of love, equating it to the greatest pain one can experience.

The hurt is definitely real.

When the love of your life leaves you, it can cause physical pain so great you think you will die. It can raise your heart rate, cause palpitations and weaken your heart muscle.

But can it kill you?

Doctors confirm that Stress Cardiomyopathy, of "Broken Heart Syndrome" is a very real thing.

You can die of a broken heart.

Researchers have found that the regions of the brain in charge of memory, learning and emotion, can destabilize the cardiac muscles and result in harmful beat rhythms and heart attack. Doctors consistently find that the levels of stress hormones in the blood of patients who died shortly after the loss of their significant other were up to three times higher than "conventional" heart-attack victims.

It is believed Johnny Cash died from Stress Cardiomyopathy just months after the love of his life June passed. Other celebrities believed to have died from broken hearts are Debbie Reynolds, Dennis Potter following his Wife Margaret, and James Callaghan- just 11 days after his wife Audrey.

An astounding fact of broken heart syndrome is that a patient can be critical one day, and with proper treatment ready to go home the next. The heart is a muscle that recovers fairly quickly if the symptoms are not ignored and left untreated.

oow that is so beautiful <3 I had heard of 'Broken Heart Syndrome' before, but never what it meant. I didn't know Johhny Cash is supposed to have died from it. Such a wonderful, although sad, topic...I believe there are connections in this world, that we feel other people, that we feel bad when they feel bad and so on. It's the sort of thing you hear about twins, sharing feelings, but I think it happens to everyone, it's just harder to locate ;)
Thanks for the wonderful post!

I agree, it doesn't happen with everyone. So if you find it, hold onto it.

how sad that would be...to find the love of your life and not recognize them :(

I don't think that would happen. You would both feel it. It will be an intense feeling. You'll know ;)

I think so too! It was just a thought...but I'm quite sure that when it comes (if it does), you won't be able to not know :)

We're soul and body, spirit and matter, but sometimes I wonder, are our feelings real or just reactions to the chemical-cocktails in our brain? Does chemistry define us or the soul is connected with the body and communicates with it through chemistry and electric signals?

That's good food for reflection...

Good point. I often wonder the same ;)

I believe this is definitely true and in glad research is beginning to back that up. When my grandmother passed away, I am certain that my grandfather died of a broken heart and it was only 7 months later. The routines and genral rythm of life is completely thrown off when you've spent ever hour of your life with someone for the past 60 years and all of a sudden that person is no longer there. I can only imagine such pain with comparisons of breakups, and I'm sure it's a far worse situation.
I appreciate the way you dove into such a topic, very interesting. As always, I enjoyed reading it and it got me thinking, thanks!

I am pleased you found it meaningful :)

I am told that my great-grandfather died six months after his wife of a broken heart. Sadly, he left my grandmother orphaned, but that a story for another time.

Awe, that is a sad story

So many people, especially couples that have been together for a long time, follow each other in death. Love is aomplicated affair of the heart. Thanks for a good post. 🐓🐓

I believe love is a joining of not only hearts and lives, but of energy as well.

Yes. I think there is a lot of truth in your statement. I can't imagine life without my one and only.🐓🐓

Science has finally done the research and is "telling" us what we already know :)

It's a widespread belief in our society. It's also a romantic belief that has serious real world consequences. I would suggest that the damage to the heart comes from the stress and shock of the loss which are ultimately treatable with existing cognitive approaches, not to mention mindfulness and more spiritual approaches.

Exactly. As I mentioned many cases are turned around almost immediately with proper treatment.

I believe you can, I've seen it happen. The doctors gave a different reason but those who knew him knew the real reason.
Great work Kitten. ❤️

Thanks Percy :)

Thanks for sharing nice post , mind and body connection so its not that surprising

I am grateful the medical "professionals" are finally realizing just how strong the mind body connection is.

Wow, powerful and interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for reading :)

I had heard that about Johnny Cash.
On a not so serious note, when your love goes, maybe it is in the best interest of your heart to replace them as soon as possible??

I actually have read about that. I think it is good for the heart. However, the "rebound" interest always ends up suffering. But, I suppose if time is right and communication is open it can be beneficial for both.
