January was a good month health-wise for me. I managed most (started on the 2nd) of the first month of the year without alcohol and also performed some sort of exercise almost every day. February didn't start quite so well (I wonder why?) and I've not been pushing myself as hard as in January at all, but this past week with Scruffy the dog has reencouraged me and given me time and think about the physical health of myself and others.
I spend a minimum of 35 hours a week sat down being employed, and then there is Hive. Who else works at a desk and then spends a fair majority of their free time writing daily, managing communities, developing/playing games, curating content (ok I might be pushing it there) - pretty sure it's not just me.
This sort of arrangement has the makings of a sedentary lifestyle, and I'd rather link than list the massive list of problems that will likely occur if one does not move enough. What's enough for me is likely to be different for you and the next person, or dog, but the BBC reckons that fewer than 5000 steps a day is enough to see some benefit.
That's encouraging isn't it?
Just over 2,300 [steps]
isare enough to benefit the heart and blood vessels.
If you have a big house you might be able to do this at home but in my 60 square ft apartment even 100 toilet trips a day wont cut it.
Every extra 1,000 steps beyond the 4,000 reduced the risk of dying early by 15% up to 20,000 steps.
A pretty bold conclusion, isn't it? That's 15% not 14% or 16%...
Anyway, walking is good way to start the exercise ball rolling I reckon, and seemingly you don't need to do too much to start.
In the past I've been encouraged by people here to write more as a way of processing previous moments, documenting positive moments in life, and drawing out positive future plans. I'm really grateful for this, and admire the consistency and drive some authors here have to write almost everyday and provide something of interest, most of the time. However, this must mean we're all sitting down too much!
I'd really like to hear more from my friends on Hive regarding positive lifestyle changes in the form of physical activity, because I want you do enjoy your advancing years and crypto millions.
Could it have been the lack of visibility that made me think more inwardly during my walk yesterday, where this fog (or mist?) visited us and lingered for much of the day?
(Scroll down to the last 4 photos in a recent post to see what the view usually is from this location)
Scruffy didn't seem to mind the conditions too much and it was mostly business as usual.
Mum, if you are reading, you didn't give me anywhere near enough blue shit-bags! (I've still been picking it up though, even at dusk)
I'll never be a motivational speaker but I do try to encourage those around me to cycle, paddleboard, jog, and perform core or HIIT workouts. If it is not this messy haired fella (recent post), I hope you can find the encouragement to give your body something to do - it may deem itself surplus to requirements earlier than expected otherwise!
I'm not promoting getting a dog by the way, maybe you could borrow one for a week though?
Have a healthy and active weekend!

About 10 yrs ago my work life changed direction, from commuting into London daily. I found myself shutting up shop (literally) and thinking of a change of pace, one of my goals for this change in scene was to be able to walk to work. That worked out well, I found my first "corporate" job, and could walk to work, 45min each way gave me a solid 10,000 steps a day.
I loved it, but things change, my company morphed, my role changed, my office is now in California, so I work from home mostly, and yup, my daily exercise level has dropped off.
I am rescued by my little Yorkie, who is always up for a walk, albeit, a very walk, stop, sniff, walk, sniff, pee kind of rhythm, not sure its doing much for elevating the heart rate, but he does have his moments and puts on a run for a bit.
I've recently discovered kettlebells, they are perfect for a bit of home resistance/light cardio, I highly recommend them, you can get by with only one moderate bell, I'm adding successively heavier bells as birthdays/christmas give me an opportunity to drop some "cast iron" hints ๐
I can resonate with that, having had 20/30 minute walks to work in the past and now remote working. Glad to hear you have a pooch who needs those walks and other business. My mothers dog is back at home now but I've actually walked further both days since (as she's an old girl and I was taking her way further than she'd been in years) and plan to continue, until the water warms up!
Weights are home are a must, I think, and they don't have to be heavy - I've only got 2 dumbbells with 20kg in weights. I've used kettlesbells in the past but not consistently. The 'swing' movements do seem to activate a lot of muscles if controlled.
I think I need a hint regarding the cast iron!? ๐
Sorry. Off topic. Hello, nice to see you. Maybe you would know?
https://www.leofinance.io/threads/view/nonameslefttouse/re-leothreads-pij82jxt
Hello!
I believe I have a query for this somewhere. Sometime today I'll have a look for it...
But I don't have all day! Just kidding dude. Take your time; no hurry. Just doing some research but I don't have those fancy tools. I just know fancy people. lol
Dalz pulled through. Got my numbers dude. Don't worry about it.
You know, with my daughters 18th and a full day of work, I'd forgotten all about this! ๐ถโ๐ซ๏ธ
Good stuff Mr Dalz
It's all good.
Side note: My youngest turned 18 last year.
It good to know that the dog is giving you more benefits than just being a companion. Finding the motivation to exercise can be difficult most of the times. But when you have a responsibility that coincides with it, then it isn't so bad. That being said, I do need to walk and exercise more, since I spend most of the day in front of the computer.
Yeah, and then you find the walk was enjoyable :) I went for one this evening without the dog as she is home.
I would say so, start tomorrow with a walk and some music in your ears? :)
Oh wow, that's even better. I think this setup is just temporary, so taking walks without the dog is huge. I hope you can keep doing it.
I'll try. I'll definitely be standing up from my computer more. Baby steps haha.
Well it's two three runs and three to four circuit sessions for me, mornings, got to be at the same time, before work works for me, around 7.30, earlier when it gets lighter, then yoga three to four evenings before bed.
I aim for 10K a day steps but I think I average around 9K. Got to build this naturally into yer daily routine, otherwise it's a bit dull.
Allotment helps too, that's good exercise but only what 8 months of the year.
I think something fun like paddle boarding is the way to go too, I may even take that up myself if I ever have a bit of spare cash.
Oh, and IF of course, if you're feeling middle class, aka skipping breakfast if yer too poor to eat three meals a day.
You are doing great sir!
How many hours do you think the runs, circuits, and yoga amount to?
Paddle-boarding got me in pretty good shape last year and my back n core have lost a bit due to the not so fun cold water months - I can't think of an exercise like a good stroke of a paddle, and them rowers god some big shoulders!
Exercise at 7:30 and skip breakfast? Not for me! Since I moved here though and evening meal is later it's possible to go to 10/11 am without anything solid. I start getting grumpy after that.
It must be at least 10 hours a week in total.
You gotta just blast past those hunger pains. If you can get through until 14.00 it becomes easier!
You'll be going for a while yet!
U're like a total calculator but u make a valid point. I juggle so many things and coordinate so much, but I understand what it's like to be sitting for hours. To avoid it being terrible in the future and prevent the pain in my butt, it seems like the Pomodoro helps somewhat a little dance between sessions to stretch the body... Though I think I should set an alarm for those times when I get silly and don't want to get up so much to finish.
It's a spectacular view, kind of intriguing though, ain't it? Like, the beach just disappears? Seems like a desert.
Yes, ofc and many crypto millions!๐
Your dog is a lovely companion, I recently lost mine and I miss her a lot since she loved to play and run with me, she was a great companion.๐ฅ
Ha! Not any more (but I have a good idea in my head ๐ค )
This sounds great!
This was the first time I've seen a fog like that here! The water is visible, just. so I would say visibility was maybe 100 meters? Pretty cool though!
Aww. I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I guess it is hard to think about partnering up with another just yet?
Awww how modest, after putting so many possible % โบ๏ธ๐
Yeah! Sure! Movement to leave rigidity aside ๐๐๐๐ป
I have never seen one like this, calculating again ๐? It's funny, it reminds me of post apocalypse movies
Thank you for being so kind, it has been very sad to lose her and see her like this. Yes, hmm for now I think not, maybe in the future when I feel better
I definitely noticed since lockdown that my health was getting affected by being sat down so much. When you work in the office you move about quite a lot. At home, not so much. I make a conscious effort now to get out at lunch and walk like a fucker. It all adds up. Throw in stone gymery and yer laughing! Hopefully ๐
Right. I guess the commute, skiving in the bogs, and/or needing to speak to the person at the other end of site does add up!
I had that Amazfit watch during lockdown and beyond, and some days came to less than 1k steps - doh!
Sounds like you got a reasonable walking routine going on, which is why I think you deserve a nightcap this eve!
I was never out the bogs when in the office. Wrote most of my hive posts there, lol.
I try to hit the 10K daily. When I first got my Fitbit I was horrified that on some WFH days I was scraping in less than 2K steps!
Now a bad day is 6or 8K.
And it deserves the very nightcap I am having ๐๐
ha! Excellent multitasking, or just taking the piss!
Definitely at the start, and then 6 months later I was doing 100 burpees!
Cheers!
I hope you continue to stay healthy and I love the dedication you showed towards it in January and it is never too late to get that done again.
Also, the fact that the people here motivate you to write is true and thatโs exactly how I feel too
Happy writing!
Thanks, I'll get back into the swing of things soon - the sunshine is my main motivation for exercise and it'll be back soon I'm sure.
And yes, motivating by leading and doing on the writing part!
I don't understand how they made these calculations. I think it should have been a fractional result. Something like 15.67% haha.
Great pictures man, but I can't lend you my dog because I don't have one.
It's ok dude, I've just cleaned the hell out of the apartment and don't need more sand right now :D
Owning a dog is a pretty good solution to make sure you always stay active just for the sake of all these daily walks needed to take with your pet. I tried to teach my cat the same way because I miss those walks but he's really not into outdoors experiences. But I do keep myself healthy and active by going regularly to the gym which is something I'm very proud of!
Nice try with your cat! I get lost in cat doom scrolling at times, really bad for my physical health, but makes me happy!
Well done for getting to the gym, I've not been for a year or so as I've found (if motivated enough) that I can do much the same thing at home or outside. I'd like a weight bench though for the moobs :)
If you get the weight bench and dumbbells then yes, you can do absolutely everything at gome and forget about gym. But these are so expensive ๐ณ๐ณ
I started walking to relieve stress and day to day tensions I realized that it helped in a positive way in my life, I started little by little, I work in an office just like you in hive sedentary life increases health problems so walking is good, although this week I only did it once I have to keep my rhythm.
I'm glad to hear and hope you can find your rhythm again soon :)
Its good to see you doing more on the fitness side and I think sitting the entire day in front of the screen is not at all good. These days I see you doing good activities but I think there should be a balance between fitness and work.
and BTW puppy pic is good..
Yep balance - we need to work on gathering crypto and well as keeping healthy to enjoy that wealth later in life :)
I will promote getting a dog, they are the best.
She's been good company actually and I've enjoyed giving her a race along the promenade :)
Having a dog promotes one getting out and walking more regularly during the day, consider a permanent companion that does more good than harm.... !LOLZ
Mist rolling off the sea looks superb for walking in.

Best puppy ever :D Looks like a beautiful beach night for sure love that view!
She's pretty good to be fair, except with cats!
That should be a given lol although It's pretty wild seeing cats and dogs together getting along.

Living in the USA is sort of sucky for your (walking) health, because this country is so car culture oriented. It's easy to think "just get out and walk," but most roads have no pavements, and not even worn footpath in the grass at the side.
Thankfully, we live close to the beach, so I can walk there... but it's seasonal.
But healthwise? I do get in 5,000+ steps most days, and often the equivalent of 20,000 in the summer when I am mowing the lawn with a push mower 3x week, and working the vegetable garden daily.
There's definitely health benefits... making a point of walking more since about 2017, combined with almost exclusively drinking water rather than juices/beer/pop means I've slowly dropped about 15kg and just feel a lot better; less sluggish.
This is @denmarkguy btw, I just realized I'm on my alt account.
