Repealing ‘Net Neutrality’ is not ‘draining the swamp’ but rather building a Dam around it.

in #h7 years ago

I found it funny that the Federal Communication Commission and the Presidency saw the step to repeal the ‘net neutrality’ law as part of the ‘draining the swamp’ agenda. I rather see it as a construction of a Dam around the swamp because such a move will only promote the interest of the establishment.

Another thing I found to be a myth is the assertion that net neutrality is a disincentive to creativity and innovation because of the boom in several alternatives to cable tv like Slingtv, Netflix, Settv and a whole lot more. Just a couple of years ago, I remember I had no option than to settle for an average internet, a home phone I never used, and an average cable tv package and which I paid a whooping $120 per month. Because of ‘net neutrality’, I was able to abandon cable tv, upgrade my internet speed, paid for the tv stations I often watch through slingtv and also signed for Netflix and all these for $ 70 a month. I currently use Settv which offers 500 HD tv channels for just $20 a month. I believe the established cable tv and internet companies have lobbied this government to help them considering how people are ditching cable for other cheaper alternatives.

What is ‘Net Neutrality’?

The net neutrality rules were passed in 2015 during the Obama administration when Democrats controlled the F.C.C.
The goal was to adapt regulations in such a way as to acknowledge the essential role of high-speed internet access as a gateway to modern communication, information, entertainment and economic opportunity. So the F.C.C. opted to regulate broadband service as a utility — making the internet the digital equivalent of electricity and the telephone.
The major broadband and telecom companies like AT&T and Comcast have argued that utility-style regulation represents unnecessary government meddling that will reduce their incentives to invest and improve service. The result, they say, will be worse service for everyone in the long run.

How will a repeal of ‘net neutrality’ affect you and how you entertain yourself?

A repeal of net neutrality will afford established cable tv and internet companies like AT&T,Spectrum, Comcast and Cox so much power and autonomy that they will determine how you entertain yourself. They may slow your internet or even deny you service when they see that you use your internet to stream media. They will charge media streaming companies like Netflix, YouTube, Slingtv, Settv me and these companies will in turn pass the excess cost to you. As a result no longer will your Netflix bill be $15 a month but $30.

What the hell are they smoking in Washington 🙀🙀🙀
