Gun violence statistics you probably haven't heard of

in #guns7 years ago (edited)

So in this post I want to adress some statistics that most people haven't heard about. I wanted to shed some light on some facts that most media outlets don't report, and probably never will. Please remember to check my sources at the end. It is not just my opinion. I would love to hear what you guys think about it, feel free to comment, especially if you don't agree.

There are about 32 000 gun deaths every year, according to the CDC , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a federal institution. Of these 32 000, a little over 60 percent are suicides and three percent are accidents. Of the remaining 11 000 or so, a staggering 80 percent are gang related. Which means that there are around 2500 gun homicides annually of people who don't associate with gangs. The reason being since only a small percentage of gang violence affects innocent people, less than 6 percent according to the CDC.

Think about that for a second. 2500 people in a country of 320 million. Thats 0,0000000002 per 100 00. Does this seem like a huge problem?

But the US still has the highest rate of mass shootings in the developed world you say? Turns out that's simply not true. The US ranks 11th in annual death rate from public mass shootings compared to just the european countries according to a study done by the Crime Prevention Research Center:

Furthermore the US ranks 12th in frequency of public mass shootings compared to the european countries according to that same study:

Note also that almost all of the european countries have much stricter gun control, and far fewer guns per capita than the US.

The point of this post is not to say that it's not a problem in the US, but simply to state the fact that it's not by a long shot simply an american issue.

The evaluation period is only 6 years, which might cause some issues when inspecting the data, but there are plenty of different statistics available which are rarely picked up.

People have a tendency for data they prefer, not always the most trustworthy data.
