Gods Unchained Review - Is It Worth It?

in #gu3 years ago (edited)

It sure has been a while since I reviewed a game but Gods had me hooked for a few weeks now and I think it's about time I shared my thoughts on it.

Gameplay

As we all know, the game can be clunky and unresponsive at times but when it works as intended it can be a lot of fun to play. As a former hardcore Hearthstone grinder, I can say that I am pleasantly surprised that someone finally got creative with the mana pool. Getting to max mana takes time and planning so props to whoever came up with that.

Graphics aren't really top-notch but you can't expect too much from a beta release. Visuals really do need an overhaul and I'm expecting that to happen sometime in 2022.

Economy

Apart from the gameplay, I'm sure that the play-to-earn aspect is the most important one for new players. Right now, Gods Unchained offers a ton of ways to earn packs and $Gods tokens just by playing the game.

If you are able to play 35 games during the week and 25 during the ranked weekend event you could earn at least 3-5 GODS tokens per week along with 5-10 card packs as long as you can keep up with the requirements.

More information on this can be found here.

Overall, the in-game economy seems well-designed. The Gods token has found it's place in the forging process now that the forge also requires Gods to mint new cards.

This should increase the demand with many more use cases planned for the near and distant future. If you want to get some without buying them on the market this is the best time to start because more daily quests and events are on the way. All of them will allow players to earn Gods tokens.

Pros

If you are bored with traditional card trading games I firmly believe that Gods Unchained can be a healthy alternative to explore. New game mechanics allow you to be creative with your cards and decks while simultaneously learning how card ownership is handled on-chain.

Even though I didn't play the game much in the past I believe that rewards were never better than now. For the last 4 weeks of the Gods event, I accumulated over 25 tokens with 4 more weeks to go. If I get to 50 that would be equal to $300 just for playing a game I actually like.

And before we stop talking about earning rewards add the Gods Unchained Hive contest to the stack. Just by registering your username in the comments and playing the game actively, you can be eligible for Hive rewards. Writing GU content is an added bonus.

As I said, no better time to get involved with GU than now.

Cons

On the flip side, there are a lot of things we could complain about as well. Without GUDecks tracking your progress in the game is impossible. I know it's no big deal for those that are used to this but new players will want their stats to be displayed in the actual game.

Progress tracking is also broken if you are planning on relying on the game to tell you your exact rank and division. If you play GU a lot you know that there are days where your displayed level and rank are actually 2-3 games behind.

The game can break during matches if you overwhelm it with complex moves. For example, if you are trying to revive a minion from the void but the void is filled with a hundred 1-1 zombies it may take some time to load the list. In some cases, it can freeze with no hope of getting your back into the game.

I don't even need to mention all of the random disconnects that can happen from time to time right when you are one win away from Mythic.

Final Thoughts

Gods Unchained feels like a game that you can actually recommend to someone who has no experience with blockchain gaming whatsoever. With all the bad stuff that can be said about it, it still offers an innovative gaming experience that has a lot of room to grow and evolve.

All that VC money will be spent on improvements so I guess it is fair to expect a completely different game in a few years from now. Until then, you should all be accumulating those Gods tokens while you can. Rumor has it they will have many more use-cases outside of GU.
