4 days after Gridcoin's new stake v8 came into effect: what do you think about it? share your stories

in #gridcoin7 years ago (edited)

4 days ago, we saw Gridcoin's new PoS "stake v8 kernel" coming into effect...

We saw how people:

  • got stuck at block 1010000
  • landed on at least 2 forks
  • can not actually come onto "this blockchain" without a snapshot
  • low network weight and difficulty

Soon...

We have again superblock problems (takes like 2 days; missing BOINC projects)...

But... 4 days later...

This post is basically to find out your problems, moods, ... about all this.

If you experience bugs (e.g. your node doesn't respond, ...) please use the bugtracker.

I'd be also interested to hear stories from you about:

  • how long did it take you to stake blocks in pre-v8, and now in v8?
  •    a) please provide also details like: how long your client was actually running without interruption since v8 came? and check that you are really running the new mandatory 3.6.0.2 version
  •    b) list your magnitude
  •    c) also list your stake weight (see here), and your DPOR weight
  • Thank you for helping us understand what stakeV8 really brings upon us!
  • keep also in mind: the net weight, ... is low on this chain currently, so your chances to stake will be now higher than when "the hordes" join this chain also
  • see summary of 17-24 users in the table below, much red :-(

Share your positive + negative stories in the comments below, or find me on IRC or twitter

P.S.

  • no matter what you do, check first that you run the mandatory 3.6.0.2 version

Sort:

Magnitude: 150
DPOR weight: 1119

Staking a block about once a day. That's fine

Not everything fine though, I've had 2 forks the past 4 day's.

Wait, are you telling me you stake daily with only 1119 DPOR weight since September 1?

  • or is that before Sep. 1 ?

Yes that is correct, staking once a day after 1 september.

That doesn't sound right.

  • I mean it would be good for everyone, if true

Are you using Gridcoin 3.6.0.2, and have also these hashes ?

Yes I'm using Gridcoin verson 3.6.0.2

Coins I have minted show up on gridcoinstats, so I guess I am not on a fork

The hashes are also OK:

Your magnitude is irrelevant in V8, and DPOR is incorrect in the current client. What balance are you on?

Thanks for collecting this data.

The more data we have the better chance we have of improving Gridcoin.

In addition to Dpor Weight, please state your Stake Weight in bottom corner (Client Messages) or if you don't have gui, stakeweight/combined from getmininginfo command.

DPOR weight: 1119
Stake weight: 77570
Magnitude: 150

Staking:
1 september: once
2 september: once
3 september: twice
4 september: once
5 september: twice

My previous dpor weight of 1119 must have been a glitch.
The numbers today are:
Dpor weight 22926
Magnitude 150
Stake weight 1822133

My previous dpor weight of 1119 must have been a glitch.

DPOR is not correct in the current implementation.

Stake weight: 77570

This implies you have a high balance - you are staking with that.

Staked 1 time since v8 started
Mag: 390
DPOR Weight: 13451
Prior to v8 - Staked 2-3 times a day
Had two forks since v8 release

Unfortunately, in the current client mag is irrelevant (does not help you stake) and DPOR is incorrect. Only balance and stakeweight are useful for approximating stake times.

theEarl:

  • staked every two days before. Never after v8.
  • magnitude = 30; DPOR Weight = 10756
  • he has been able to run it up to 2 days continuously, because it froze once.
  • he has 3.6.0.2

Have no luck here... never staked after v8
(DPOR Weight =3186)

DPOR weight still incorporates mag... It is not a useful measure anymore.

Magnitude: 14
DPOR weight: 81439
Stake weight maximum/combined : 1612220 / 4104328

Staking a block about thrice a day (no superblock though, Linux).
I was on an evil fork but that was one day before v8.
Had to relay the snapshot from July the 17th.
More strangely, my wallet closed itself yesterday but afk for 4 hours when that happened so I can't report.

DPOR Wight: 43619
Magnitude: 425.00
Stake Weight: 3455538
Never staked after V8, before 3 – 5 timas a day.
After the change to V8, I was at least once on a fork. Am I on a fork now? How do I check?
This is one of the main problems if you are not staking daily, you never know if you are on a fork or not.

fork or not:

  • check hashes from here

when I compare your data with Lars (who has less GRC than you), you should have staked by now also

  • interesting case

I just want to inform that I have staked about two hours ago. But I am still interested in more user experiences.

here is a preliminary table from what was said so far:

I also had at least one Client freeze (with 3.6.0.2) on Win 10. My stake weight is 3659778. For the sake of completeness.

I was staking roughly every 36 hours before with a magnitude of 100.

The predictions before the switch where saying that I would stake once every 3-4 weeks. Luckily it looks like I will be staking about once every 3 days with the v8 kernel, which is good enough for me.

Net Weight: 2111905
DPOR Weight: 35226
Magnitude: 310

Staking about 2 times a day.

Have been on a fork at least 2 times. E.g. today i staked 12 times in 5hours. Usually a good sign that iam on a fork.

The gridcoin wallet is running 24/7.

thx, how was your staking-interval before v8 ?

Between 3 and 10 times. My Magnitude does vary a lot depending what else i have to simulate. The Long term mean was about 5 to 6 times.

Mag: 35
DPOR Weight: 3363
Stake Weight: 266230

Have not staked since v8, last payout was 8/26. My hashes all check out, not on a fork. This client (3.6.x.x) has been very unstable, I'm currently using 3.6.0.2. It either goes "Not Responding" or tells me "Unable To Send Beacon! Unlock Wallet!" even though it IS unlocked for staking. It still will give me that message if I leave the wallet fully unlocked. This happens every 2-4 hours.

try this:

  • unlock the wallet fully (not only for staking unlock) AND let the wallet run for like 4-6h

I've tried this already but I just went ahead and unlocked it fully again. I'll see whats up when I get home from work in 8-9 hours.

Follow up: After 12 hours of the wallet being fully unlocked it has not frozen or given me the Unable to send beacon! message. This is the longest the wallet has ran fine since 3.6.x.x for me. I suppose I can just leave it fully unlocked?

no, just leave it unlocked with "for staking only" now

Magnitude: 170
DPOR weight: 8186
Stake weight maximum/combined : 134336/654949

Staked twice since v8.

No issues with v8 so far.

before v8:

  • A little under once a day, about 1.2 days per stake

Thought I should provide a little more information based on the table you made:

My client is running 24/7 on a raspberry pi
I have not landed on any forks
Running 3.6.0.2
No client freezes or crashes

Mag: 160
DPOR Weight: 5529
Stake Weight: 429544

On average I staked not quite once a day. Longest Ive gone without staking is 4-5 days.

I have not staked a block yet, and I am on the correct chain. (matching block number and difficulty as the ones shown on gridcoinstats.eu)

edit: I had the wallet crash once or twice, but no real further problems assuming I stake a block soon.
edit2: Got a PoR reward woohoo

How can I get a csv of the transactions section of the wallet? Then I could work this out a bit more easily. Anyway hope this is right:
Couple of days between stakes before and same after
a. 1 reboot needed (yes 3.6.0.2)
b. 10 - lame I know.
c. net weight 13501679, dpor 5463, stake 6901atm (edit:- ooops that stake is wrong it is actually 988375)

You could try command listtransactions in the !debug menu (type there first: help listtransactions).

And then import into that into Excel or whatever

As someone with about 100 GRC who is interested in solo mining, these forks have stopped me from making the leap of buying enough to stake myself. I'd be terrified of losing it with how many times I have to re-sync my GRC wallet.

Hello when will there be a proper value for $GRC coz it still low on volume and price... HODL ing a huge bag of $GRC

the prize on exchanges depend on many things:

  • what BTC prize is doing
  • traders' thoughts
  • ...

ask them first ;-)
