Gridcoin Community Hangout #030

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings! Follow him on Steem! :D

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

Where can I listen to past hangouts?

029 RSVP & Topic suggestion thread

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

If there are not many topics suggested then hangouts won't last longer than an hour, on the other hand if there are many topics suggested then the hangout may last 2-3 hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Dev news:

  • Staging has been merged to master. Waiting for Rob to release.
  • Major UI work by huppdiwupp to be merged. Cleaned up UI, support for styles via style sheets, simplified translation strings due to inline CSS removal.
  • SSL enabled in IRC channels. Revert?
  • Refactoring, dead/obsolete code removal and cleanup.

I'm about to remove the Gridcoin address from the block indexes to save memory. They are only used in the "magnitudecsv" and "detailmagnitudecsv" RPC commands so if you use those commands, let me know.

Overall, while there hasn't been much visible activity on github several developers, ex-developers and repo maintainers are doing great work, either directly with code or indirectly with investigations and testing. Thanks to TomasBrod, iFoggz, BullShark, TG13088, caraka and everyone else who chip in. I feel we have gained a lot of forward momentum lately.

SSL has been removed from the main channel as it was disrupting bot operations. Ultimately, IRC is entirely public & it's up to users to make sure they're using SSL - I'm using it, so should everyone else but enforcing it is too tough a measure.

boooooooooooooooooooooo.... ;)

exchanges:

  • Gridcoin reaching over 3000 Satoshis on the exchanges

As of 18:52 UTC +1 the price has dropped to 1650 Sats.

Hopefully it won't go down much further and we stabilise soon. Frankly as far as I'm concerned watching it go up and down again added a bit of excitement.

I won't be divesting any GRC, it'll stay in my wallet staking.

I'm here for the long haul!!

Earliest throwback to team founder role implications

TL;DR:

  • 99% of BOINC users do not hide their email address, thus the team founder can see this. If you have advertised a beacon in the past and it has expired, it's possible (however unlikely) until a fix is in place that a malicious team founder could advertise a beacon on your behalf.
  • If you've not registered for all projects, given your email address & the fact that BOINC projects do not require you to verify your email address prior to granting access a team founder could preemptively register an account on your behalf, exfiltrate the account key & thus have established a permanent account compromise for said BOINC project (even if you change the email/pass/username). Relevant info on account keys.

Removal of the mandatory team requirement will mean that you can crunch outwith of a team, minimizing the above risks. There's 200k GRC up for grabs for anyone that can port the NN to C++ whilst scaling back the quantity of users randomly selected to gather the data and form the superblock.

We are working on brainstorming improved proof of CPID ownership mechanisms, help out if you can.

oh damn. there have been a couple of new projects that an account was already created for me. is there anything we can do now in the way of resetting keys, or is there a way to change email without affecting Gridcoin?

If someone else created the account for you, not yourself, then the account key never changes and they can get in. You could request the account key is changed but that will require a direct change to the database by the project admin (unlikely).

If it was created by boincstats then that's not a big deal.

on world community grid, at least, there is a reset weak key button. i pressed it, and am pleased by its placebo effect so far. :D

May 20: would be in 3 weeks, and not 2 weeks, as usual. correct ?

You're correct, I have changed the post to May 13th.

Date changed to 13th May 2017!

progress with: "talking with BOINC admins"

Looking forward to listening to what's in store next for BOINC / Gridcoin.

just wanted to talk about all the stores that now accept us through coinpayments.net, and what some of the stores have requested as advertising. also, we should discuss making a section on the main site that has links to stores. :)

experiences from the first ever held Gridcoin CHESS tournament (May 6 + 7)

summary/result picture/next tournaments/new task/vision + comments by players for both tournaments here.

We've already 650 GRC as fund for the next tourneys, see here.

PLEASE DONATE!

Although I crashed and burned on the second leg, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Congratulations to all those who played and the worthy winners.

Hopefully my brian will be up to it next tourney.

challenge situation: past/current/upcoming team competitions

the Pentathlon (May 5-19) is the major challenge now:

  • here is today's report (Day 8)

I am creating daily summaries for the Pentathlon

Our positions in the BOINC team challenges, from last 2 weeks:

I am currently locked out of my Boincstats account, is anyone else unable to login to the website?

whitelist time:

  • any new candidates for the whitelist ? see task

Duchamp Sourcefinder (please come to the interview on Sunday

Any more frequent, observed user problems ?

My Wallet Backups folder hasn't been adding any new backups since the end of March (since 3.5.8.7). Maybe there's a setting I need to manually re-check or something. Windows 10 using version 3.5.8.8

You could add a bug report ?

I have no windows, but on my linux I see backups in walletbackups folder for each day

Just in case, you can also backup manually.

!backup
Make sure you have a backup of 1. your wallet.dat and 2. gridcoinresearch.conf files, and 3. the directory: walletbackups. (Without both (1.+2.) you've LOST your Gridcoins.)
They are located in Windows: %appdata%\GridcoinResearch (and for linux: /home/your_user/.GridcoinResearch/ )
Want to install the backup'd files somewhere else?

Thanks. I back up all of these things regularly, so I'm not in jeopardy of losing the coins. I opened a new issue on github: https://github.com/gridcoin/Gridcoin-Research/issues/292

your avatar is the best.

Voting time: past/current/upcoming polls

Potentially create a poll regarding fixed POS block rewards?

Why? Past POSv3 poll was too inspecific, poorly formed & premature.

My suggestion for topics: Bitcoin 101. 'App' language for people who have no idea what any of this means or how to make sense of it. How can you get people who are locked out due to life limitations (not being experts - there seems to be no middle ground...I mean, I don't even have a cell phone, despite my best intentions keeping up) up to speed. Or even in the ballpark of jumping into the game. Sorry ...no offense whatsoever, I feel strongly about this subject and the frustration I have encountered. I am sure I am not the only one who experiences this...there must be a decent crowd of us somewhere. I bet many techies don't even know we exist. Sigh. Please help. :(

I fully understand the frustration that some people feel when it comes to getting involved in crypto-currency.

The subject is very daunting and it can often be difficult to get ones head around the nuances of the subject matter.

I free lance as a personal tutor for those of the 'older generation' who feel that they have been left behind.

The majority of these people are often too 'scared' to really use a computer, or in some cases don't even own one.

However, the willingness to learn and continue learning is the hump we all have to get over in order to progress in modern life, I still see and nurture it in the persons I assist .

I have helped many persons, from all walks of life, to achieve their digital goals.
Their goal may be as simple as learning to send an email to writing a book and publishing it on-line.

In fact my 'star protege' is 89 years old and is now an emailer, skyper and google researcher and has published her first book on-line. Not a bad achievement at any age.

There's no limit to what we can personally achieve and there are no real barriers once you have access to the internet.

Yay! We need more people to do this...more awareness about it. I think there are a lot of people out there who are functioning on only one 'thruster' who get by using tricks and shortcuts without real understanding of the system and I think these people have the picture skewed. Its as if you are supposed to know before you get the chance to learn it. Thanks for the response.

You are most welcome to join the Gridcoin IRC help channel and get more information on how to get BOINC and a Gridcoin wallet up and running.

We are a friendly and transparent community.

OK, thanks!

For Gridcoin, sure.
