To Get to the Truth – Ask Great Questions!

I love the movie; “A Few Good Men” and have seen it several times.

And of course, one of the great quotes from Col. Jessup, played by Jack Nicholson, is; “You can’t handle the truth!”

When asking questions though, we don’t usually have the power of the judge or court behind us to get to the full truth.

However, there are strategies we can use to get to the truth. It’s also important when asking questions that aren’t looking for “our truth,” we should be looking for “the truth.”

The problem you have in these situations is that you can’t get to the truth, if you don’t ask the right question or follow up questions.

If you really want to know an answer to a question that has you perplexed, it’s best you have a great question in the first place.

OK, so how do we do that? How do we formulate GREAT questions?

Here are some points for you to think about, before you ask that “all important” question you really want answered:

1. Don’t look for a predetermined answer – often people are looking to confirm their own belief which leads to an answer that doesn’t provide additional new knowledge.

2. Answers to great questions, will often require contemplation – Allow the person you are asking the question of, time to think about the answer. And, in some cases, research the answer. (this doesn’t work well on TV, but that’s not where we’re coming from)

3. Challenge your own or others existing knowledge – This is similar to number one, but not quite the same. If you know the “usual” answer someone might give, frame your question so it challenges the existing knowledge.

4. A great question leaves you wanting to know the answer – Even if you aren’t asking the question, a great question leaves you “needing” to know the answer. When creating your questions, make them “need to knows.”

5. Frame your question as a “What if” scenario – When you ask “what ifs” you are challenging the person to come up with different scenarios and multiple answers.

6. Asking one great question should generate other great questions – Always be ready to ask the follow-up question based on the answer you receive, not based on your predetermined list.

7. Be unpredictable – Without being rude, ask the person something they were NOT expecting. Doing this will often take you places, with additional questions, not even you were expecting.

So the next time you are about to search for the answers you need, in whatever scenario, think about implementing one of more of these strategies to ask the questions you want answered.
