I gave up on the resolutions thing years ago.
Never seemed to work for me so I stopped it. Only in the last few years have I decided to set goals for myself instead.
Although some still evade me, I found this method felt more encouraging and definitely more effective than resolutions.
My tips on goal setting.
Everyone's different, people might like setting high goals and really going for them.
Me. I like to warm up and start small. It's almost like training yourself to focus and really set out to accomplish your goal.
I figured once I got this bit down pat I will get to a stage where my goal kicking process knows the drill.
Number 1. Don't forget your goal.
In 2017 I quit meat and cigarettes. It wasn't hard. It was something big that wasn't really on my to do list but it just wasn't working for me anymore.
When I look back at it now, I feel I did it with ease and perhaps that's because it was a big thing that I couldn't just shove aside and ignore.
It was in my face everyday.
I feel like in some regards our goals need to be in our face too so we can be reminded of it.
Life gets so busy. So many things happening at once, so many distractions it's easy to forget something not in your face.
Your goal isn't exactly going to yell at you to listen to it so it's your job to keep focused.
Tip. Write your goal on a piece of paper and stick it on your mirror or somewhere you look often so you can read it often. Mine is on the fridge.
Number 2. Start small and work your way up.
Sure I'd love a bazillion Steem Power and just as much in crypto, but unless I win the lotto or someone gives me all that, I know for now I'm going to have to knuckle down and get it done myself.
Bazillion sounds like a lot and perhaps not that realistic, so I opt for choosing a more realistic target.
My goals for the end of 2017 were
- 2k Steem Power
- Buy Bitcoin
- Buy 5 other crypto currencies
- Organise SteemPh Core's posting schedule for next year
- Line up 1 charity for January 2018
- On board 2 more people on Steemit
Where am I at today?
- 2.3k Steem Power
- 6 cryptos including Bitcoin
- Schedule is still not done
- Charities are lined up
- 2 on-board and more to come.
Did I check everything off?
No, that schedule is still pending but the rest got done, plus I powered up a nice amount before the year ended.
I honestly feel a great sense of achievement looking at my list knowing I managed to tick most of the goals off.
and that's why I'm all for doable goals lol
Number 3. Set yourself a deadline
I found this really helped me focus and keep track of my progress so I could meet the deadline.
Towards the last few days of 2017 I powered up just to make sure I was over my 2k target by New Year, actually my overachiever gene kicked in and I powered up past my goal lol.
Having that end date, for me made my goal more real, and I truly felt the need to "complete my mission".
Number 4. Do it because you want to.
This train isn't going to get moving without your commitment. You, and only YOU can change your situation and hit those goals.
If you don't make a move, nothing moves.
So decide once and for all. How much does this goal mean to you?
My January 2018 Goals.
- 3,000 Steem Power
- Buy 2 new cryptos
- Don't buy any crystals!
- Create a personal curating schedule and stick to it for a 1 week trial.
- Be in our new house in time for the Eclipse in Jan 31.
What are your goals for January 2018?
Are you gonna go big or are you going to take it slow?

I quit smoking 2 months ago. I felt like by setting it as a new year's resolution was only setting myself up for failure and decided to call it "a head start on my goals."
I really like how you break your goals down. It makes them feel more like a grocery list that you can just check off than a huge, intimidating commitment
Yay! Congratulations on quitting smoking! It's amazing how the feeling changed the moment the word "resolution" was taken out. It's like all of a sudden :)
And thank you! That was my aim, to make it seem like not a huge commitment ❤❤
Well mission accomplished. I really need to sit down and list some goals now.
i need 2 smoke some DICK
I don't think anyone here is trying to stop you.
Congratulations on quitting smoking, that's a tough one for sure! How did you manage to kick the habit? Will power, NRT? That's one of my goals for 2018.
If there's one thing I've learned from the many times I've tried to quit, it's that I have no willpower when it comes to quitting lol. I found Champex worked great, but I hit a point where it started taking me to dark places and they were dark enough to be out of my comfort zone, so I stopped taking it. The next best for me was the patch, which is what I used this time around. I did have to push through it because the smell of the patch turns my stomach and it tends to make me sick, but I managed to get through. I'm still struggling, so I have the gum for backup and I'll be hitting the vape shop on monday to get me through the morning meltdowns lol. I want so bad just to be done with it, but I don't want to start smoking again.
I haven't done resolutions for a long time either. I like to do vision boards. And always have to remind me to make my goals smaller.
This year, my only real goal is to only allow things into my life which give me joy.
ohhh vision board! it's been so long since I made one, I think I'll give it a try after we move.
That sounds like a great goal to have. Too often we put up with things that drain our beings. I wish you luck and much joy in 2018 @mariannewest ❤
Thank you so much!! And lots of joy to you in fulfilling your goals and everything else you do!
Its always good to have goals to motivate onne to keep moving forward, but I dont believe in New Years resolutions I also gave them up years ago, well my last New Years Resolution was to give up resolutions and I stuck to it. but i do set myself goals

Good job @bearone for quitting smoking.. hahaha.. I tried it once but failed, so I envy you.. I also envy you in achieving your goals. Hopefully mine will achieved as well. Though I am thankfull in being in a position that I worked for 8 years.. hopefully, more will come to us. God bless on curation.
Hey @savings. Thank you!
You will get there when you're ready, just don't give up on your goals.
Sounds like you have a great job, 8 years is a long time!
More will come. Have faith.
very nice strategy on goal-setting momi @bearone and good to see you've achieved most of them...
I see you want to buy 2 new cryptos for january? I'm not sure what you have right now but I'd say go big on Ethereum, lots of upcoming developments for that coin and conservatively I'm looking at $1,500 a piece by 1st quarter. Now it's hovering around $1,000. Another good buy is Lisk (LSK) which rumored to be re-branding early this year.
@precise Thank you! Was a huge learning curve and I see more learning ahead of me.
Funny you mention eth. I love eth I invested a little bit in it and it's been one of the steadiest coins I have. I'm spewing I didn't buy when steem was at 10 but I'm also focusing on SP ~ cos steem is my main currency lol
Thank you very much for the tips! Imma go get some LSK! If Coinomi supports it I can get it lol
Without sounding like a narcissist, my 2018 goals are to focus on me. I’ve not had the time for the past few years (to many babies lol). This year I am going to focus on my mental, physical and emotional health, well I’m going to try!
Love. I've always been a believer that change begins with ourselves and the key to that is looking after ourselves. Can't pour from an empty cup and I can imagine you've been flat out for the last 10 years. I'd say it's about time you focused on you ❤
Thanks hun,
Can’t pour from an empty cup!
I like that, never heard it before, I may have to steal it.
you made it and you even go way beyond your goals. amazing and inspiring! i wish i could achieve my targets too this 2018 ❤
Thank you! I have no doubt you will achieve all your targets and then some this year!
