I don't think it is because if I noticed that hapening I'd start discretely filming it and then send the evidence to trading standards to get his mate's auction house closed down.
Not much long term profit in that.

I guess if that was happening at every auction it would start to become obvious. A better strategy would be to select particular items to bid on so that it is more discrete. Even winning a few auctions might be a good idea to remove suspicion. It also depends on the nature of the auctions and the clients. In long-run, I don't believe any of these strategies will be particularly successful.
