PLANTING FALL CROPS... IN THE RAIN

in #ghsc7 years ago

This is a new and fun gardening experience for me!

With a longer growing season down here, my opportunity to plant throughout the year is definitely increased. Recently, I noticed that something interesting had happened with my gourd tunnel...

It looked like all of my birdhouse gourd plants had died. On the West side of the tunnel I had planted the Snake Gourds, which are still doing excellent. On the East side, though, I had planted only Birdhouse Gourds. Now, all the birdhouse gourd plants looked dead.

Sure enough, upon closer examination, the stems were all brown and the plants were dead. Now it looks like I'll get a second opportunity to plant this side of the tunnel this year, which means some bowl gourds and scoop gourds! Also, I planted some squash, beets, and carrots, which I also cover in the video. Enjoy it!

@papa-pepper The Beauty of your Gardening is that you will have a Harvest and you get to see what Works and what does not Work............May God Bless your Seeds and Plants...............

Thank you @stokjockey! He has blessed us in our efforts so far!

Sorry the birds lost this years houses! Gardening is an art-form, not a skill, LOL! You can always plant radishes....

How are the quail, Didn't you add some recently? I am considering them for tick control, because the Guiney hens don't seem to last long, since they are bird brains.

Oh, we didn't lose the birdhouse gourds, just the vines. About twenty gourds reached maturity and can be used for houses and seeds. The plants most likely just ran their course and finished their life cycle (making mature fruit and seeds for the next generation.)

The quail are doing well, and we've got some eggs in the incubator. You could really crank out a lot of little ones from the eggs to release for tick control and try to free range them. We have yet to move the poultry to our land, but it is coming soon. We plan on having the Guineas do the tick work for us, but good idea on the quail.

The Guineas are so loud, what ever eats them, hears the dinner bell. They don't last a week. Hoping the quail are smarter, and a lot quieter, LOL!

Radishes are a great "little pepper" plant. They grow fast enough to keep them interested, and are pretty hardy. :)

My bird house gourd plant will probably live through winter the thing is wild. Lol
Do you have a greenhouse? Did I miss that post? It will be time to plant your winter greens soon!
I just got another round of squash going. Love it sauteed in sweet cream butter.
Looking to get my panels for my goat housing. Decided on two females they are being weaned.
It is time to think about winter prep. Will you use wood heat?

We plan on using wood heat as the primary source.

We were actually given (yes given) two (yes two) hoop house green houses from other steemians (one from @weetreebonsai and another from @freedompoint & @freedomtowrite) They are on our to do list.

Oh wow what a blessing!
That will make for some exciting content, well exciting to an aspiring gardener like me anyway. Lol
When we first went off grid we were short on time for wood gathering and used propane. The condensation was terrible!
Wood heat is more sustainable as well. The fire, the crackle of the flames and woodsy smell make for a cozy and warm feeling in the home. Great memories can be made around the fire in winter. Be well!

GREAT POST, NICE VIDEO..
GOOD GARDENER !!
You can really make sure the type of plant that is suitable to be developed in your garden. Also the availability of seeds from what you harvest. but we often experience if saving seeds that are less dry when planted back grow less maximal. Of course this is closely linked to the reduced quality of seeds after experiencing several generations.
It's good to change the new seeds we get at the seed shop as you usually get, thus ensuring the quality of its growth. If from the side of care I am sure you are much more careful and can take care of the garden well

maybe gardening can be a fun hobby ..., let alone share knowledge with steemit friends, may your day please @papa-pepper.

Lots to do! Happy building!! Growing a second crop sounds really exciting! Your garden looks awesome! I love the rocks that border the beds!! Just awesome!! Great growing ❤🙏❤

Is there any chance a dog or some other animal lifted its leg and fertilized those dead plants?

Not thinking so. Not sure what happened, but at least the gourds they did produce look mature. We'll see how the next round goes.

The only reason I brought it up... is some plants can't handle urine (weeds do rather well apparently).

I know this from experience. Watched a dog pee on some plants, a few days later they were dying, and in 10 days they were dead.

Gardening is a great way to share your experience with others. I like to plant trees i have made a green house in my house. I pass my spare time there.
As we can see that you have an other chance to plant something. The snake gourd is looking fresh. In our country it's known as kaddu. We call this as kaddu.

That's cool you're going to have a chance to do a second batch. Hopefully the warm weather is able to get you the full harvest. That would be nice to get two uses of out the land.

Lordy miss Gourdy ....

Love a nice gentle rain. Gardens love it too. So, the zone you are in you should be able to get two crops in per season. That is awesome. If I plan right, I can squeeze out three. I can still plant in dry season, but watering becomes a problem and the plants don't seem to do as well...

Good time to also plant green beans, we put some in the ground today!
