Harvest Yet to be Had!
Even a neglected garden can surprise you with a bountiful harvest! Now, granted, I should not be neglect something I love so much but I had some pretty darn good reasons for it this summer! You see, our farm has been hit by a horrible wet season that made my goat herd very sick, deathly sick in some cases. (IF you want to read about that here are the links... first post , second post , third post ) So every ounce of my energy and minute of my day was spent trying to save them! The garden became very low on my priority for well over a month.
We have now, it seems, managed to gain control of the situation with the goats. So when I was done milking this morning, with time to spare, I stopped to look. I trudged through the waist high weeds to investigate things closer. I was quite surprised to find so much life and growth! It's like my garden new it had to hang in there for me till I could get back to it!
So after marveling over my HUGE asparagus (read about my permaculture success story here... ) I moved to the next bed and stopped in my tracks when I realized my late planting of okra had not only gotten huge!
Not only had it had begun blooming!
But there was even a full sized fruit!!!????
Oh yeah! I still got it!
I am encouraged by the little victories and excitedly, I search for more signs of life. That's when I discover my late green beans in the next bed over had also begun to put out little baby green beans...
And even some big ones ready to be picked!
My little helper and I harvested what was ready while munching on fresh beans!
The ginger and sweet potatoes looked great too! The heirloom popcorn was drying on the stalks and the manure piles were sinking into the next space to plant in with the help of some worms and microbes! Things were going along quite nicely without me. Despite the weeds and neglect, we will still gather a harvest from this tired garden yet! And then, the fall planting is upon us! Time to direct sow seeds of my favorite root and leaf crops, if I can pull out all those dead maters soon. Now, where did I put those carrot seeds...

Ain't life Grand?
You can duck walk the tall weeds between the rows and put brown corrugated cardboard down. The beds can be weeded by hand but the paths can be easily dealt with this way. Do you have an appliance or bicycle store near you? They have awesome...huge boxes!
Great Job!
Keep up the Good Work.
Great idea! Thanks for stopping by!
How could something as pretty as the okra flowers taste so nasty as the full grown vegetable?????? LOL!! Rose your garden is just like one of your kids. Sometimes you just have to let them alone to see what they will become.
But I LOVE okra!
Me too! ;)
