Hello my fellow gardeners and farmers. The ground is finally warm enough to start my early plants. Today I'll be going over planting onions, garlic and some tips for planting.
Onions and Garlic are cheap and easy to grow. The Onions I will be planting come in sets of 80. I'll be using a Yellow Stuttgarter, Red Karmen and Classic Garlic.
I plant these around the edge of my garden as a deterrent of harmful bugs and animals. They will keep out Aphids, Japanese Beetles and even rabbits. I'll also go over companion plants and what not to plant them near.
Let's take a look.
Yellow Stuttgarter
This onion can be used raw or for cooking. It's an excellent storage onion meaning it can be harvested and saved for later. Onions can be planted as soon as the ground is thawed enough to work. You can even plant them in late fall or early winter if you want.
Also keep in mind Onions like to be planted in full sun and well-drained soil.

- Cabbage family (Kale, Brussel Sprouts andBroccoli)

Red Karmen
Much like the Yellow Onion in planting and companions, I won't go over all that again.
This Onion has a zesty flavor and is commonly refereed to as the Salad onion. It can be eaten raw or cooked. These are thought to be one of the easiest Onions to grow.
Classic Garlic
We use garlic in a good bit of what we cook. Garlic has a great flavor and many health benefits. It's known to combat the common cold, help reduce blood pressure, is very nutritious and has very few calories.
Garlic also likes to be planted in full sun with well drained soil. Here is some info.

Onions can be harvested in the August-September time frame. They can also be kept in the ground longer but you have to be careful they don't rot. They should be stored as cool as possible and with very little sunlight. Under the right conditions onions retain their eating qualities for up to a year.
Garlic should be harvested in the July-August months. Storage for garlic is much different than onions. They should be stored in a cool place with good air movement. Do not keep them in plastic, they will mold or sprout. Along with good airflow they also need humidity. When stored properly they can retain flavor/texture for up to 6 months.

I never knew onions or garlic could last so long! Why do onions and garlic need to be planted away from peas and beans? Is it because their watering and drainage needs are different?
Garlic and its allium relatives stun the growth of certain crops (Beans
Peas, Sage,Parsley).
Onions and Garlic are great against fungus related tomato plant illnesses. Some people use them as a tea to spray on their tomato plants to prevent the fungus related "early blight" for example. Just to name one of many benefits. @dfinney
Thank you!
They last a long time. The ones you buy in the store have been out of the ground at least a few weeks already. Not sure of the science behind why you don't plant them together, that's what I was taught growing up. Mother Earth News and the farmers almanac have good companion planting guides that I've used also. Thanks for the comment.
Hope they all grow well.
Thanks. Me too!
