Missouri garden tour - Mittleider method (2019)

in #gardening5 years ago (edited)

It is time for another tour of our garden here in NW Missouri. We will show you our garden grown in the heat sink greenhouse and out in our native soil. We gardening using the Mittleider method. Everything grown in the greenhouse is in sawdust and sand.

Sort:

As I myself involved recently with pesticide free - safe to eat vegetables and was thinking seriously about farming in the near future, your post seems to be really worth for me. Yesterday we brought 150 grow bags for farming few different types of items.

I was not familiar with the Mittleider method and I do a googling to know what the term refers to.

Thank you for this post.

You're quite welcome. The Mittleider method is also known as the poor mans hydroponics system. Just as hydroponics provides all the nutrients to the plants they grow, we do the same thing in our soil. Setting up hydroponics can cost in excess of a million dollars per acre. The Mittleider method is a tiny fraction of that cost.

wow this looks like a dream home garden, so neat and well organised. I love that little wood hut that comes in the beginning of the video but what is that? I have seen it at some places but never knew its function.

Do you maintain the whole garden all by yourself? must be a tough deal. Congrats on your curie vote though :):)

Good morning. That little wood hut is a block for the leaf cutter bees we use as pollinators in the greenhouse. They're a tiny bee, their length is about the same as the width of a pencil eraser. Because they're so small they can pollinate our cucumber and tomato plants.

Leaf cutter bees are a hiveless bee, so they are quite docile. The block you see in the beginning of our video is where they rear the young. They lay an egg, provide a bunch of pollen for it to eat and enclose both inside a little cocoon made from bits of leaves.

We do have a short video on them.

Maintaining the garden doesn't require much time. When it becomes time to harvest things do get busy. Thank you for your kind words.

wow this is like science of pollinating and giving the bees a home to lay eggs,, hmm so nice. But don't they bite you? Bees in India -everyone is scared of them, they would bite you and it would be bad.

Leaf cutter bees are very docile. If I stand too close to their house they will not come out of the holes.

ohhh that's an interesting fact.
Bees of different behaviors in the world, hmm.

We have several types of bees that are hive-less. The mason bee is large in size but is also used for pollination in gardens, particularly for fruit trees.

Nice, the bees come by themselves in the beginning or you need to bring them or maybe invite them in your garden? lol weird thought

Is the YouTube channel yours? @smallblockfuelie

My husband and I lived in southern Missouri for five years homesteading. It's always fun to find others from the same state! I've never heard of the Mittleider method...I will have to look into it!

I have been finding lots of Missouri homestead YouTube channels lately. There seems to be a lot of us. Our tomato plants grown with the Mittleider method are now over 7 feet tall and are grown just 9 inches apart.

The organization is the perfect base for a good place, it gives that feeling of relaxation and I suppose it will have cost in that. Congratulations friend ♡

Thank you. It is quite relaxing for me to be out there in the greenhouse. Fortunately with the 95 ton rock heat sink under it we will also be able to spend time out there this winter. We should be able to grow hardy crops all year long now. Plus our frost sensitive crops will have their growing season significantly extended. Our goal is to pick a vine ripe tomato from the greenhouse on Thanksgiving day.
