Join The Challenge

This is a shout out to all gardeners. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got a farm, a backyard, a balcony or only an indoor garden.

I’d like you to join a challenge with me. Maybe ‘challenge’ is not the right word, because it implies competition.

Maybe I should call it a ‘SteemIt Garden Journal’.

I’ll explain what I mean with that in a second.

r64.gif

Gardening Season

I assume it might be different in other parts of the world, but here in Belgium, the gardening season has kicked off.

Thousands of people are preparing their garden while growing precious seedlings in propagators and on windowsills.

r64.gif

The Ice Saints

Everybody is anxiously looking at the calendar, counting the days until the so-called ‘Ice Saints’ has passed, which takes place on May 12th to May 15th. Those days are known to bring a brief moment of colder weather and might bring the last frosty nights of spring.

It’s only after May 15th, that it is safe to take the plants that are sensitive to frost outside.

And then, the gardening season really takes off.

r64.gif

Pictures

If you are a bit like me, you never visit your garden without your (smartphone) camera.

Last year, I’ve made hundreds of pics of all my veggie plants. If one had grown an inch, I simply had to take a picture.

Source

Now, this gave me the idea of starting a community garden journal. It’s not only a way to get to see other people’s beautiful gardens, but you finally get a chance to show of yours to people who are interested. (If I show my girlfriend pictures of a kiwano that has grown an inch since last time, she just nods - lol)

r64.gif

The Idea

So here’s my idea:

We make this a monthly journal. Once a month, I’ll put up an invitation post like this one.

Every time, I’ll ask you to make a post in which you show how your garden looks. You can include what you’ve done, which things were a success, and especially: which were not.

The pictures will be the most important aspect, however.

filmstrip-2208127_1280.jpg

If we keep this up until the end of the season, you’ll have a great journal that tells the story of your garden. You’ll be able to see how your empty containers or beds turn into beautiful jungles of plants and flowers, and see your garden flourish with every month that goes by.

From past experiences, I’ve learned that such a journal feeds the feeling of accomplishment when you’re finally able to pick that first ripe tomato, or the first large zucchini.

And who doesn’t like to share his garden stories with like-minded people?

r64.gif

The Challenge

The challenge will start this week.

Here’s your assignment:

rules.jpg

I will be setting up a Steem Bounty that will reward you for leaving a correct comment (= title + link).
Read more about how Steem-Bounty works here
At this point, there is a 6SBD Bounty to be distributed.
2SBD were generously donated by @lynncoyle2.

Be a good sport and check out other people’s journals. If you like them, make sure you upvote their entry in this comments section. This will increase the Steem-Bounty they will earn.

When this post reaches payout, I will check out all entries and give 2 contestants an extra reward: each will get 25% of the generated SBD.

I will put up a post like this once every month. The assignment won’t change: take pictures from your garden, share your happiness about a plant that is growing at warp speed, or your sadness if one of them didn’t survive.

Aphids, fungus, caterpillars, heat waves, ... feel free to share. Maybe one of the other community members will know a trick that can help you deal with all this.

I promise you, the pictures will be stunning. They will show you how you started with nothing, and ended up with a magical garden.

r64.gif

What Are You Waiting For?

Grab that camera and start taking pics. There’s a big chance most of your garden is still empty. Good! Make a photo anyway.

photographer-868106_1920.jpg

Then write that post, showing us how your garden looks like at the moment. (I will get my own post up asap.)

Use the hashtag #gardenjournal2018 and post the title of and a link to your article in the comments section below. You’ll be rewarded with a percentage of the Steem-Bounty I set and might win a @steembasicincome share.

If you don’t want to miss next month’s announcement, feel free to follow me or set up Ginabot on Discord to follow me or the tag '#gardenjournal2018'.
If you are not familiar with Ginabot, check out this step-by-step guide.

r64.gif

Extra Prizes

It is NOT required to upvote or resteem this post to enter the challenge. Of course, it would be appreciated since it will grow the prize pool and get more people to join the challenge.

I will offer some extra prizes if you do:

❇️ 2 randomly chosen upvoters will each receive a @steembasicincome share .

❇️ 2 @steembasicincomeshares will also be offered to 2 people who resteem this post. These winners will also be chosen randomly.

(All @steembasicincomeshares will be sponsored by @organicgardener, which is like my 'gardening-Steepshot account'. It’s still small, so it can use the shares. Of course, I would be grateful for every new follower for that account too. @organicgardener is the place to be for regular updates about my garden.)

I hope you will see the benefits of this ‘challenge’, and help me build a community of garden lovers, which will grow together and help each other out when needed.

r64.gif

Conclusion

Create a (photo) diary from start to finish, in which you will see your garden grow every month.

Find out how others do it and learn from each other.

Be rewarded for contributing: every valid contribution will receive a share of the Steem-Bounty, plus the upvotes from myself and other users.
At post-payout, 2 people will receive 25% of the generated SBD as an extra reward.

r64.gif

Ready, Set, Go!

Show me how your garden or balcony looks like at the moment. I bet you’ll be surprised how much it will have changed when you post new pictures a month from now.

I can’t wait to see your first series of pictures.

What a great idea! I love the idea of celebrating the garden season and sharing - it will be fun to see gardens from around the world! I wrote something last night that I think meets this criteria. https://steemit.com/homesteading/@walkerland/spring-garden-tour-welcome-to-my-world-love

It is just perfect; exactly what I was looking for. I’m already curious what it will look like next month :0)

Congratulations on the curie vote!!

Thank you! It was a nice surprise to wake up to yesterday. I'm not sure how these things happen but I'm not going to complain! I'll definitely be searching for posts under the tag you created. I love your idea and am always looking for new garden inspiration and ideas.

Curie is looking for quality, real-life content that is undervalued. I guess one of their curators stumbled upon your post. I think you deserved it.

💙💙💙💙😁😁😁😁😁🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

this information could be very useful for fledgling gardners in the future. i will do my best to contribute as well!

That would be great. I will post a second edition of this contest in a month.

(EDIT: Here's my post . Can't believe I managed to get it done haha)

Ok, here's some quick pics of my balcony, but I'm going to do a post as well right now. It doesn't matter if I make it in the "contest", but it's a great way for me to see progress; otherwise, unlike you, I would never take a photo of any of it :)

I brought a couple plants from our other place and just picked up the hydrangea and hibiscus today from a street vendor. My plan is to grow some vines up the blue railing and add some small lights there too. The reason is two-fold; I think it will look really nice, but I found out when we were signing the contract that there are no pets allowed here. Buddy's gotta hide :)

And the yellow thing hanging is my hammock, so if you don't see much progress next month, you know what to blame it on haha

If it's not too late, I also want to send you 2 sbd to put towards the bounty ;) If it is "too late", save it for next time!

Thanks for joining, @lynncoyle1.
that beautiful balcony will be an oasis of green before you know it.
And thanks a lot for the contribution.

You are welcome! I'm happy to participate in a contest that is just good and not steemit related...not that the steemit related ones are bad. (I feel the need to qualify that haha)

And you're welcome for the contribution; it's my pleasure!

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.510 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.503 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.007 SBD from the community!

Such a cool idea @steem-bounty :)

We are glad u like it!

I didn't know that I'd get a human response! It really is such a clever idea @knircky ...something that rewards commenting, and in effect, helps create community on steemit is beyond awesome in my books;) Thank you so much!

Great. I had to go look up what 'morrels' were - lol
Keep us up to date about how the story continues.
Thanks for your entry!

Does that mean i can enter twice??
Lol. Love the project. Couldn't believe
i was the first to drop a link!!

The contest will run again evey month...

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.544 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.542 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.002 SBD from the community!

I LOVE this idea. I actually wrote a post last night that I planned to put up on Weds. But I will post it today, so it will be April's contribution.

What's Out There Now

https://steemit.com/homesteading/@goldenoakfarm/what-s-out-there-now

Awesome! Thanks for joining.
Quite a garden you will have to look after. It will be probably a busy gardening season for you. I can’t wait to see how all that looks like in a couple of months

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.465 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.465 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.000 SBD from the community!

What a beautiful garden you have there! Very diverse. And I see you’r like me: always taking the camera to make pictures of the babies ;0)
Very nice entry , @thelaundrylady. Thanks for joining!

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.465 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.465 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.000 SBD from the community!

I love this idea. I've been doing this somewhat, but not in an organized way, and not every month. This journal should certainly help me keep tabs on things better.

April Garden Journal: Exuberant Spring

https://steemit.com/gardenjournal2018/@ginnyannette/april-garden-journal-exuberant-spring

I’m absolutely not organized either. In my garden, I like to wing it - - take it as it comes.
I hope this can help you to getbmotivated again, because it looks like you have an awesome garden space

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.465 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.465 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.000 SBD from the community!

Hmm I thought I replied to this earlier, but I'm not finding it.
So, here we go again. Here's my post...
https://steemit.com/gardenjournal2018/@wizardave/april-2018-gardening-journal-wizstead-post-12

Looks like you have big plans, @wizardave. :0)
I can’t wait to see what everything will look like in a couple of months...

Yes, I probably have way more planned than I'll be able to accomplish, but there's always next year to carry on... and I'll be starting quite a bit ahead of where I am this year, so it all should work out great in the long run...

It’s better to plan toonmuch than too plan too little, if you ask me :0)

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.426 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.426 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.000 SBD from the community!

Thank you @simplymike! That's very cool!

  • It looks like we could have chipped into the bounty as well? Be sure to teach us next month. I'll pitch in to the bounty...

I’m still trying to figure out the bounty as well.
I should do the calculations of this, because I had set it to 6SBD, and I have a feeling you all got less than I had expected.
Once I’ve figured it all out, i’ll be sure to share what I’ve learned

Happy Sunday! I just wanted to let you know that I mentioned this contest in the most recent Weekly Homesteading Newsletter in order to help promote it a bit! This is a great idea and I can't wait to see where the garden journal goes!

Thanks @kiaraantonoviche, I noticed. Your support is very much appreciated.

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.021 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.000 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.021 SBD from the community!

I can't officially join the contest, still I want to create my own gardening journal. See my April update here:

Tremendo @simplymike

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.003 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.000 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.003 SBD from the community!

I've seen amazing projects on steemit, in the time i've been here and to be honest this is one of the best i've read, all the aspects you described make think about how good you planed it.

It's a shame that to participate on the trial i need to have a garden already, because the fact that i will be sharing the progres with the comuniti here really motivates me to plant some tomatos and chilli pepers (the plants i have experience with).

Good luck with this contest, maybe i can join for the next one :)

You can join in any time.
My girst post, I hope to get it up tomoryow will have photos of my empty beds and containers. Only few things are planted yet. Step 1 is beginning with nothing... ;0)

Congratulations! Your submission earned you 0.003 SBD from this bounty. You have received 0.000 SBD from the creator of the bounty and 0.003 SBD from the community!

A bounty of 2.000 SBD has been set on this post by @simplymike! You can read how they work here.

To all potential contestants: the more people join the challenge, the higher the Steem-Bounty will be set

What a great idea, and what a well put together post. I will try to get out there today. Its Winter here but my vegie garden still grows... not as cold as Belgium in the winter!

You can grow things in winter, so I’ll be on the lookout for your entry ;0)

Great idea to stimulate the community, unfortunatly, we are moving on June 1st so it will be complicated to have our small balcony garden before being in the new appartment.

But I'm looking foward to see the result of that collective contest ;)

You czn join in August. Then there will still be 3 or 4 months to go ;0)

Switzerland have a warm climate that can help. We will try to grow something in the begining of June after the moving.

This is agreat idea for a contest. I have new strawberrys in my garden, Maybe i will join later :)

nI’m jealous: no strawberries yet, only flowers :0)

At the moment we have a lot of these. We call it "Löwenzahn" -"Lions tooth":)

Dandalions in English, if I’m not mistaking. We call them ‘horseflowers’ for some strange reason - lol

Thanks, I’m trying :0)

Cool! I just did a garden update earlier the week.... I will have to do another one and submit it! Awesome contest! I can't wait to see everyone's gardens and meet new gardeners!

I really hope we can reach a number of people. I think it would be fun to see people’s gardens grow.
I won’t participate in the contest, but I’m going to write my own update tomorrow :0)

Or you can change on tag on the one you did and submit it here... :0)

It's already past payout, but I will try to get an update this week if time allows it! Do I need to get it in by the end of this post's payout? I thought I remember reading no, but I can't seem to find where I saw it.

The steem-bounty will automatically be paid out when the post reaches payout..

Ahh! That's right! I better get my act together! :)

Great idea dear @simplymike
Gardening is my passion or hobby... I love to make gardening .. I have a flowers garden... Thanks for sharing your experience about gardening...

Thanks. It ould be great if you would join the challenge...

Thanks, I will try to join this interesting challenge..

This is a great idea, resteemed. I'm the same for taking a picture of every thing when it grows an inch. Thanks from the UK

onions.jpg

I never go out to the garden and come back with ni pics - lol
I hope you’ll be joining the challenge

Great challenge! I've just put out some pots - a little early here in Wyoming, but the tender ones come in every night and the seeds I put out are self-seeders normally, and would survive normal frosts, so I feel okay about them. Better get out the camera!

You should! :0)
I just start putting the pots outside during the day to make the plants used to the climate, but there are simply too many of them - lol

Yeah, "too many" happens quickly, I think! I was gifted some shasta daisies yesterday and got them into some pots as we don't have our own yard area yet.

Well, this is tad too late honey!
I just did my gardening post last week. Damn, what a miss! Would it be annoying if I re-did it? Or probably join in next month :)

Such a great initiative!! You spew so much creativity. Loving it.

You can see my gardening post here

Cool garden. It looks like you are already in the middle of gardening season, or am I wrong?
You can just join in next month if you want...

Or you can just change one tag and make it a submission for this contest...

I dont actually have a garden. But now am thinking one would not be so bad. I just have a feeling am racing against the tortoise. This is really nice well done @simplymike.

This is such an incredible project! I love the idea of the garden journal, and like it even more about it being a community based one. I don't have too much space for a garden in my flat, I only have cactus and one plant :) Looking forward to see the beautiful gardens on Steemit!

Maybe this could be a good motivation to get a couple of small new plants in the house and watch their growth.
Or grow your own kitchen herbs on a windowsill... ;0)

This is not for me @simplymike, though i'd have loved to do some. My academic endeavors are making sure i am very far from my backyard garden!

Otherwise it is a fun challenge. Always fun to watch the garden change from soil brown of seeding to plant green of pruning and finally harvesting!

Sounds like you have done some gardening in the past... :0)

Hahahah....back here, gardening is just about the first thing you learn growing up.

This sounds fabulous... we are heading into winter here in Australia so not a big growing season for us right now but we are about to re-do our herb garden so I could do that. I've just come in from the garden this morning with the last of the chilies and a couple of nice pumpkins! : )

IMG_4155.JPG

Great initiative simplymike!
I won't be able to join you because I'm moving out of my house in a couple of months and I'll have to kiss goodbye to my beloved terrace garden, but I can't wait to se how you're doing :)

Thanks.
I hope you’ll have a balcony otr a garden in your new place?

I don't know yet. Hopefully there will be a big garden :)

Such a great idea! Thank you for creating such a great challenge. I just saw your post 5 minutes ago. I will try to make a post today. Hopefully, I am not too late. I followed you and resteemed this post. Just want to make sure I don't miss your post next time :)

Thanks, @thelaundrylady.
There are still 4 days before post-payout, so you still have time to do a post. It would be great if you did, because so far there are no entries yet, and there’s still a 6SBD bounty to divide... ;0)

Awesome. More time means better pictures! Thanks for letting me know. I will definitely submit my post very soon!

We just moved to a new apartment yesterday. I have to move my plants yet tomorrow, but I'll be taking a photo and this might push me to keep on top of it all lol

Hope you're doing ok :)

I’m fine - with a little ups and downs ;0)
Still in the process of moving??
Take a pic of the plants in their old spot, and one in their new spot, and make a short post with both pics ant you’re in:0)

omg now you're killing me! haha the movers had the plants moved before I could blink, so you're only going to get the new spot...and a post too??!! stop with the pressure lol

The bounty on this post has been increased to 4.000 SBD by @simplymike!

Have already posted about my spring cleanup a couple of days ago....

https://steemit.com/litterwalk/@novacadian/litterwalk-with-me

What a great idea. Will participate from time to time - we are heading into winter and hopefully coming out of a drought. I have shared a little about that, but will re-hash in due course.

This sounds like a fun challenge. Hope my mum will allow me to take some photos of the garden. 😜

The bounty on this post has been increased to 6.000 SBD by @simplymike!

Too many prizes, I'm confused... :O
