Organic Gardening: Why Doesn’t Everyone Grow Sprouts? – Part I

For years, I’ve habitually grown sprouts in a jar on my kitchen cabinet. Every time I harvest yet another batch, I wonder why everyone doesn’t do this? It’s so simple, easy, no-fuss, healthy, and cheap. Did I mention cheap?

I often hear folks saying it’s too expensive to eat healthy. But growing sprouts would prove them wrong.

I purchase 2.5 pound bags of a mix called “Bean Salad Sprouting Mix.” This is only one variety to choose from; there are many others. Notice it's all organic. That's important to me.

I’m the type of person that if I find something I like, I stick with it. So I’ve been buying this mix from a company called Handy Pantry for years. (Please know that I get no kickback from Handy Pantry. It just happens to be the company I found that offered what I want.)

When I first started with them I purchased the seed mixture and also ordered a plastic lid just made for sprouting. I already had a wide-mouth jar so I didn’t need to buy it.

Here’s what the seed mixture looks like. I like this mix because of the wide variety of large and small seeds. Also, I like the way it looks when ready to harvest.

The nutritional benefits are too many to be listed in this post. But check out this quote:

“Experts estimate that there can be up to 100 times more enzymes in sprouts than uncooked fruits and vegetables. Enzymes are special types of proteins that act as catalysts for all your body’s functions. Extracting more vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids from the foods you eat ensures that your body has the nutritional building blocks of life to ensure every process works more effectively.” Learn even more facts at this website HERE.

I don't know about you, but it impresses me when I can get so much nutritional benefit from something so easy to grow. Sprouts truly are part of my organic gardening.

As an author, I always want to maintain my health and energy because writing a novel can be darn hard work! Sprouts help me do that.

In the next post I’ll explain exactly how I grow the sprouts.
