For larger seeds and transplants the broken handle of a spade that has been sharpened is very useful, the handle on top allows a better grip for penetrating the ground if needed.
Originally I used a pocket knife to whittle the broken end, but now I have a linishing belt on the bench grinder it takes very little time and does a better job.
