The past week had a large storm hit a good chunk of Eastern Australia and we were away for that day. But we were quite aware that there might be some damage to our trees... and hopefully, nothing more serious than that... the last time, we lost several wattle branches, which led to the wattles being taken out.
So, when we returned home... well, there were lots of small branches all over the place.... the usual mess from a very very very windy day.
... and my wife saw that the large Casuarina tree out the back had dropped quite a few branches as well. Some on the neighbours carport roof, and a good chunk on the ground immediately below.
This Casuarina used to have a partner gum next to it... so, it has been shielded for most of its life. However, the gum had a fungal rot halfway up and it needed to be taken down for safety. And that meant that this tree had a lot of exposure to the wind... and apparently, it was a very swirling wind in the storm... which meant that there was lots of twisting of trees going on.
... eeep, this could have gone through the window! A Christmas tree sized branch! Anyway, I started tidying up the front... and my wife started tidying up this area.
... but she hadn't done a proper look around the tree, and when I came back to have a look, I had a proper look... to see this!
Okay, this is now emergency time... as this was swaying quite a bit in the light wind... and it was overhanging the neighbour's side of things. Big enough to cause damage and big enough to possibly reach the house.
So, I went straight over to let them know that we had the arborist coming straight in to deal with this... and when I got there, they were on holiday as well... and their mother-in-law let me in and showed me this branch that had already fallen! She had noticed it the day before when dropped by to feed the dog... OMG, why didn't they call us!?!?!??!
So, this was the branch on the other side of things. Also not looking good, but she hadn't noticed it before either!
... and just for reference, the branch that DID already come down had squashed the clothesline AND did this!
Okay... this is how close it got!
So, post emergency work... the tree is now tidied up and made temporarily safe. The arborist recommends a take down, the insurance also agrees... and now we are just waiting on the government to make the final approval to let us take it down.
This massive tree is now too top heavy and one sided!

Wow, that is very close. You are quite lucky. I hope your insurance can cover the damages. We had a tree branch fall like that back in 2020 ourselves. It was quite scary. Our dog just barely made it back inside the house before it fell. She would have been seriously hurt otherwise. My wife was home alone at the time and it definitely traumatized her a bit.
