Winter does not need to be a dull and lifeless season in your garden. With a little thought and planning, there can be beauty and colour even during the cold winter months.
Comprised of colourful dogwoods (Cornus) interspersed with grasses and blubs, the winter garden at Bodnant in North Wales provides a wealth of ideas to brighten up any garden.
The colours of the dogwoods in the two pictures above are set off wonderfully by the tall white grass behind. This is a common device used to great effect throughout the garden.
The bright green of these dogwoods makes a bold statement and almost glow in the winter sunshine.
Vivid colour is also provided by Witch Hazels (Hamamelis virginiana) placed to create focal points around the garden.
The winter garden at Bodnant certainly inspired my wife and I to have a rethink about the kinds of plants and shrubs we will grow in the future in our own garden.
