The Problem With A Card Game On The Blockchain And How To Fix It

in #gaming7 years ago

This article will not be talking about card games like Uno or Go Fish. Though, as was mentioned in a comment, Uno would be a lot of fun on the blockchain. But I want to talk about more complex games like Hearthstone. You figure collectable card games would be ideal on a blockchain. Look at cryptokitties. And yes, the collecting of cards, including rare ones, does work very well on a blockchain. You could open up digital packs and sell or trade your cards as you go. The problem comes from battling other players.

In order for a card game to be competitive everyone has to have access to the same cards or at least the means to earn those cards. Maybe you need to put 100 hours in or whatever to get the cards to build a proper deck. There are cards that are more rare than others but really they are not that hard to get. And this matters as you cannot have one or two players with OP cards that easily win every match.

So when we have a blockchain version, where all the cards are worth money, the idea of rare cards can be a problem. Unlike an MMO, which encourages players to find rare loot so they are better equipped than others, you cannot have that in a competitive game. This means you are left with a game where it can only be successful if the cards on the blockchain are accessible to everyone. And it is in this problem where we are going to get card games that are going to be scammy as only those with a lot of money can succeed in them.

There is a way we can get around it though. If you have cards that have different designs, like a gold border or a rare picture but still play out as a regular card you can add rarity to an asset and still make it a competitive card game. It might not have the same appeal as a sword that does a lot of damage but it can be a way to add a collectable element without taking away from the game play.

What do you think?

Go Fish or beyond, here's hoping for that continued evolution for sustained growth.

Yes, you are right, I agree with you.

Yeah the card games should be like skins in CS:GO if you know what CS:GO is

CS:GO Is a FPS shooter game
Where there are SKINS for Weapons ingame.

Some skins even cost around 20k-40k$ What is huge amount of money.

but even if you have the rarest and most worth skins. It won't help you in any way become a better player at the game.
The skins are just for looks and flexing.

I feel that card games should be the same in the blockchain community.

Just like you said in your post that rare cards shouldn't give any advantages to the players.

Nice idea we only have cryptokitties so we have a chance to make other wonderful games.

Well 1st the only token that works for a collectable game like you state are the one's used for cryptokitties ERC-721. Those only exist on ETH blockchain and it has issues scaling. Hopefully EOS will fix that.

Now let's say we solve that problem. You stated it will be pay to play and the issues that causes, have already been addressed by MTG and some extent by hearthstone.

1 way is to continue to create new cards and different formats. MTG has modern that only lets you use recently printed cards. The 2nd way would be to reprint cards.

This can be done on the blockchain with smart contracts you could set the smart contracts to release a new # of a card once its price gets to a certain level on the auctions or when it drops to a certain percent of players having it.

As far as the collectable issue you would have to decide (much like Hasbro did with MTG) are you concerned with collectors or players ?

just my thoughts.

I hadn't really thought about it, but I think there's a lot of potential for a cooperative CCG on the blockchain. Then people could have rare and powerful cards, which is part of what drives acquisitiveness, and it wouldn't necessarily put anyone at a disadvantage.

I don’t really understand the concept of this card games so I’m just reading the comment to see if anyone does have a proper answer, this is an interesting topic which should be treated when people are less asleep

Pls friend can u upvote my two wonderful post Of yesterday pls. Thanks friend

I would love to see more games using this technology. Awesome perspective!
