[Board Game Review] Exploding Kittens

I got this game for my son for Christmas. I heard it was good and I used to read the comics from the guy who made it (TheOatmeal).

It is currently $19.99 on Amazon with 4.5 Stars.

I have played a few games with my son and friends. It's a good game, somewhat simple for my tastes but doesn't make it a bad game.

The box is simply a deck of cards and some directions.

The artwork on the cards is on par with TheOatmeal's typical comic style.

The object of the game is to be the last person standing. There are four Exploding Kittens that get shuffled into the deck and you have to avoid drawing one.

If you draw a Exploding Kitten, you are out of the game. Unless of course, you have a Defuse card. Regardless if you Defuse the Exploding Kitten or get booted from the game, the Exploding Kitten gets put back into the deck secretly wherever the player chooses. Next card, 3 cards after, or just randomly placed in there.

Everyone starts the game with a Defuse card and whatever is left over is shuffled back into the deck (unless you are playing a two player game where fewer are shuffled in).

The object of the game is to use the other type of cards to prevent yourself from drawing a Exploding Kitten and forcing someone else to pull the card. You use the other cards in the deck to give you a better chance of being the last person standing.

Everyone takes a turn one after another, you can choose to play 1 card, 2, cards, all your cards, or no cards. You do need to draw a new card (and chance pulling one of the four Exploding kitten) at the end of each turn.

Here are the core action cards you have available:

IMG_0182.JPG

Skip allows you to avoid drawing a card at the end of your turn. As said earlier, you don't have to play any card and it is recommended to not just play cards because you have it. This card is perfect for when you know the Exploding Kitten is next or you start getting down to the bottom of the deck and your chances are much higher.

IMG_0184.JPG

See the Future allows you to privately peek at the top 3 cards giving you a major advantage over the rest of the chumps playing. You can't change anything but this is where Skip can be very useful. Some cards word good in pairs and using a card like See the Future works best when you have other cards that can take advantage of the information gained.

IMG_0188.JPG

Skip is a good card to have if you use See the Future but Shuffle is another good card to use after playing See the Future if you are at risk of getting a Exploding Kitten or the next player gaining an additional Defuse card. The idea is to protect your Defuse cards for when you don't have the proper cards to counter fate.

IMG_0186.JPG

Attack is the rich man's Skip. Not only does it allow you to skip the drawing of a card phase, you force the next player to draw in your place in addition to their card.

IMG_0187.JPG

Favor allows you draw a card from another player. You can also combine any two similar cards to get the same effect as Favor. If you have three of a kind you can ask for a specific card (almost always Defuse).

IMG_0181.JPG

There are some cards that don't do anything on their own but are used to group up in pairs and triples to trade in for a card from another player. The Tacocat is a good example of this. There are I believe 5-6 cards that have no other purpose but combining in pairs.

IMG_0183.JPG

Nope is the last action card and one of my favorites. If someone plays any card (other than Defuse or Exploding Kitten) you can Nope them. The fun starts when the player Nope you back. A Nope can counter a Nope and a Nope can counter a Nopper's Nope Nopping another Nope.

That's it, there isn't much else to the game. It's a fun game but not something I'd play endless hands of. Kids and adults like it and it is something we like to start with when playing games but move on to more in-depth games after.

this looks very fun! for some reason I was expecting something about smashing kittens with sledgehammers, tho.

perfect entertainment for youngfolk, and probably the grown folk like it alright too :)

It does smell like poo :)
And we are trying to clean it!

I have to buy this game...My kid will love it.

FD.

Hi @firedream, I like this grumpy cat card. XD

Transdimensional litter box, lol, sounds like something my grand kids would get a kick out of playing. Kids are weird now a days with all the poo talk and obsessions with words like underpants. My grandson reads all the Captain Underpants books. When I was a kid no one would of thought to make games with the word poo in them or write hero books out of underpants.

There is an adult version as well.

lol, go figure.

Really fun game! I do recommend getting another pack or one of the expansion packs so you can play with more than 5 players.

I'll probably get the expansion soon

Targeted attacks can break friendships, that's from my experience. LOL

I have seen this game advertised for a while now, and wondered what the nuts and bolts were, so thanks for that. Tell me (if you don't mind!), how old is your son? I have been thinking about getting this, but my kids are in their early teens now, and I wonder if this game might get old quickly.

When you're paying $20 for basically a pack of cards, you need to be sure it's a very entertaining pack of cards!

We bought Pandemic last year. Costs a bit more, but that's a proper game...

He's 10, but we play a ton of stuff together (computer and board games). I've been wanting to try Pandemic.

It's terrific. A little difficult to get the hang of, and at ten, your son might find it a little drawn out. It took a while with mine, and my daughter still isn't very keen. Everything is so immediate these days.

We play games like X-Wing Miniatures, Mice & Mystics, and Imperial Assault, we have done drawn out many times.

Really want to get this:

Wish I did the Kickstarter, I dragged my feet as I don't like ordering something with the chance of it maybe coming out.

Wow. You'll be fine then.

I can't give the impression that I am huge gamer, but I actually played Dark Souls at Christmas! I went to see a friend for a boozy get together, and his son had got this as his main gift, so we indulged him and played it. I am mildly ashamed to say I fell asleep!

In my defence, the wine had been flowing, and the game was somewhat involved. And long. I threw the dice when I was told to, but that was about it as far as my contribution went. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it though!

I picked this up myself for Christmas but haven't had a chance to play yet.

Bloodborne reviews say it lacks replayability - as you will get stuck with a limited amount of cards.

A new expansion just came out that adds a lot more cards for variability. When you try it, let us know your thoughts!

wow great post.

SOLD! It looks like a good game to play with my kids. Could work now, or maybe in a couple of years. I'm off to Amazon...

Check out Sushi Go, I'll do a review of it soon but that one they would probably like as well.

Thanks, I will look.

PS thanks for the effort that you put in to try to keep your bots clean and ethical!

Great job done by you!!
Congratulation

do these run on ethereum as well???

We have that game at home too, and there's actually an expansion pack for it. Imploding kitten I think it's called or something. It's a quick and like what you said a rather simple game but definitely no shortage of fun and the occasional rage when you gang up on someone :D Definitely a good buy marky!

Your son gonna be very happy. he's got a father who's have time to play with him ,smile with him. I saw many parents don't have time to spends with their child. Thanks for sharing this.

We got the game awhile ago with somewhat high expectations after the reviews we heard, but were a little let down. It's a little too simple (if no kids are playing), and the whole game just felt a bit hoeky.

it would have been beneficial if u had get a normal card and teach your child how to play it.

thanks for introducing this game. i promote this game as well from amazon.com at http://amzn.to/2hf3OAi. They are good games. Thanks.

solid and fair review. I have this as well and enjoy playing it once in a while, but as you have said it is a relatively simple game and so nothing crazy exciting. Knowing when to play what cards does add some depth though.

My girlfriend loves to play it, though I think that's mainly because she loves cats. The simplicity makes it a good game to play casually, there's an NSFW version of the game as well which is just a different flavor text to the cards.
