Are these 80's video game cover arts inspired by 80's movies?

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

On the left is Contra, a video game released in 1987 as a coin-operated arcade game. Then later released on the Nintendo in 1988.

The image on the right is of Arnold Achwarzenegger as Major Dutch Schaefer in Predator, released 1987. Apart from the added bandana on the game art it's almost identical from Arnold's character in Predator.

Then there is the very Rambo looking character on the right and what looks like the Alien from the 1979 Sigourney Weaver film of the same name.

(

On the left is the game art for Metal gear, which was released in 1987 for the MSX2. The right image is of Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese from The Terminator released in 1984.

It seems the creators of these games were massive fan boys of the 80's action movies.

Anyone know of any other games with cover art taking "inspiration" from films?

If only Arnold knew this is Predator, 30 extra lives 😂 Thanks for the upvote.

I think you mean... up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start

Thanks for posting those comparisons, once you have seen it you can't unsee it

:(

But it also explains why they maybe felt so appealing
(because they reference to the big franchise movies of that time)

As a fan of retro games and (and retro game labels) i made this digital NES label slider. and when looking trough the labels i found one more example:

The Bayou Billy label (and game) looks to be inspired by the "Crocodile Dundee" movies

"Crocodile Dundee" movie:

Great find, they have definitely taken inspiration from Crocodile Dundee. I read your post the other day on the digital NES label sliders and upvoted it as I found it really interesting (I think I commented on it as well). I thought I had followed you but it appears not. I have followed you now though.

The Metal Gear cover is such a blatant copy.

They thought they could get away with it simply by adding a pair of gloves it seems haha.

great finds.

Thanks. I have followed you. Feel free to follow me for future posts.
