2017 is the year of the open world game. There are so many open world games that come out that I don't have enough time to count them all.
Open World games make a gamer truly feeling what it means to play a game. Stepping into a new Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, or other open-world game is a thrill that eclipses most things in real life, mainly because you can steal horses and set fire to things without going to prison.
What makes them so great is the ability to roam the Lands freely and while doing that accomplishing things that are rewarding in their own way, without being part of the main story.
There are a lot of people that associate open world games with only the AAA games made by the big publishers, but there are also a lot of hidden gems like The Long Dark, Neo Scavenger, Rust, Factorio, Subnautica, even Euro Truck Simulator - all of these would have a shot on my list, when I had enough room to put them all on this list.
Without further ado let's get into the List of the Top 5 open world games that ever existed.
5. The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
We can all agree that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim started the age of truly amazing open world games. While there is much to argue about Skyrim, there is no arguing about how vast and majestic Skyrim truly is. Skyrim is a place that you will remember forever. There is no one that played Skyrim and won't remember the distant sight of City's, Mountains and Tundra. Skyrim is a truly amazing game in that sense.
All the locations in this game feel really unique and handcrafted, from the mighty castles to the small bandit camps. The thing with Skyrim is that you will always find new places to adventure to, which will make the game still interesting even after 100s of hours of gameplay. There is also this thing called the main quest, but I put this off for my first few hundred hours of playtime.
You'll never get bored of the beautiful scenery, the great soundtrack, the amazing side quests, exploration, dramatic weather effects, lore and the great main story. Skyrim is one of the gaming’s greatest fantasy worlds.
When these things don't amaze you, then I know the right thing for you guys. Install some Mods and thank me later.
4. Red Dead Redemption (2010)
Rockstar games have always been a game studio that delivered awesome open world games. Red Dead Redemption was truly a troubled child with troubled development delaying the game's completion and some wild bugs unleashing a fondly remembered (but unintended) plague of flying bird-people, but the result was worth everything that I listed. Rockstar created a truly amazing world where the feeling of the wild west could be felt at every corner.
The Character John Marston, is the typical Rockstar character, that has this final job to do. Your general role in the game is to chase and shoot other men, from criminals to rich people, to ordinary people. It's your choice how you stick to the game intern Karma system, leaving you with moral choices on a daily basis.
A totally interesting story and beautiful scenery of the deserts and little towns sprouted creators of animal hunting, treading horses, treasure hunt, racing, playing mini-games, catching bandits, various challenges, and minor quests.
All the Wilderness is really rewarding, fitting into criteria of a truly amazing open world game. Sometimes nothing happens at all and you keep wondering 'why is nothing happening'. A tumbleweed may roll by, while you are riding on your trusty horse. And then a sudden burst might happen someone being kidnapped, a sudden shootout or other amazing things that happen in this world.
Rockstar truly knows how to use the calm before a storm to make this world so lively and truly amazing. Rockstar can make the truly amazing game world and this Western GTA shows how great they are.
3. Grand Theft Auto V (2015)
Another truly amazing game from Rockstar Entertainment. The world in most of the Grand Theft Auto games is fairly ordinary, that doesn't mean that it's bad. But being able to go on a crime spree, start a rampage, or simply explore every nook and cranny of your surroundings - all without the consequence, cost, and physical exertion holding us back in real life - That is the thing that makes the Grand Theft Auto so truly amazing and breathtaking.
The Fifth part of the Installment of Grand Theft Auto is a truly amazing game, that breaks any kind of record that they set with the other games. It's the biggest and most riches gaming world that they ever produced. You can play a total of three different characters, each with their own unique character and missions. Michael, Franklin, and Trevor are a combination of the urban mafia, street gangster, and absolute village madman.
Rockstar truly made an awesome game with Grand Theft Auto V with amazing soundtracks, astonishing graphics, A huge and detailed city with sorrounding lands, excellent voice-acting, motion-capture and an amazing story that makes the game truly amazing.
2. Minecraft (2009)
We all know what this is about. There isn't a gamer out there that don't know about this game, the game that maybe revolutionized gaming itself. Exploration and crafting in a blocky, bright 8-bit world. Many Love it, Many hate it. But there is one thing that everybody is sure about, Minecraft is one of the best open world games that was ever created and will last for several more years.
A large open world to explore, with no purpose beyond the one you which you create yourself. That is the essential Part of open world gaming, the fundamentals which every open world game follows. Minecraft can do anything that your immagination can think of. From being able to create a Super-Computer with Redstone, Building Justin Bieber and then exploding him with TNT, playing with your friends and building penises. Everything is possible in Minecraft.
If you're bored of Minecraft, you're bored of life.
1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)
The first Witcher games were something that only a handful people knew of and it was mildly popular amongst gamers. Then the Witcher 3 game came and they really took up a step in terms of quality, making The Witcher 3 the best game of the last year. You take the part of Geralt, a mutated monster-hunter, searching for his adoptive daughter in a medieval world devastated by war.
The World in the Witcher 3 is really huge and interesting, setting new standards for all open world games as of the release of the game. Every open world game that came out after the Witcher 3 was compared to this amazing game.
Gerald meets all sorts of people, during his travels through the land, and they've all got their own unique perspective on the world. It's really interesting how everyone you're talking to has something to tell you and something that will make you feel even more immersed. Every person is worth talking to, every location is worth visiting. That's what makes Witcher 3 truly amazing. You have this open world that is HUGE and every single corner of this world is hand crafted to make everything interesting. you're not just moving from place to place to tick off the next box on your To Do list or find the next best armor shop.
Moving through the world that is truly full of experience is what most of the other open world games lack and that is what makes the difference, between a good game and a masterpiece. The Witcher 3 feels like a journey, rather than getting mundane go to that place and fetch that quest, you are presented with a dynamic open world.
Do you agree with my list? No? Then let me know down below in the comments.
And what about Fallout?
Fallout would be place 6. in my List, I might make another list in the future.
I've played the other titles, but I really need to get the Witcher. It looks like a cool game. I love how much freedom you're allowed in open world games.
I really liked "The Witcher 3" game of the year in 2015-2016 but i think we could add Horizon - Zero Dawn in this list.
I love Witcher...but Skyrim > Witcher 3 (open world aspect)
