Top 10 Strategy Games

in #gaming8 years ago

The following are my picks for the Top 10 strategy games, I play a lot of strategy games and have been meaning to compile a list for a while of the top 10.

10.Age Of Empires 2- Age Of Empires 2 is a fantastic strategy game and a classic, featuring resource gathering, cool building mechanics, especially when it comes to walls, you can make some pretty badass fortresses ingame I also really enjoy the naval combat its pretty fast paced and you can lose a lot of ships quite rapidly.

The reason that I am putting this game in slot #10 is because it has terrible multiplayer lag and the game desyncs a lot thus making it a single player game and the Ai are really easy to kill. The game also suffers from small armies because of a population hard cap, I would really like to be able to have 20,000 units like I can in some other games.

9.Wargame:Red Dragon-Wargame Red Dragon is a rather interesting concept for a strategy game, featuring large scale battles with many different people or versus up to 10 AI, It has fast paced combat with a wide variety of units, Infantrymen,Motorized Infantry, Tanks, Armored Cars, Jets Boats, etc. It has it all, making for some exciting tactical gameplay. The game forces you to earn points by destroying enemy forces and capturing zones, your units have limited ammunition and fuel and can run out so it forces you to think about attacks before you commit to them.

The reasons that this game has earned spot 9 are the following,

  1. Its extremely difficult for a new player to get into and takes a long time to get experienced and build up strategies, I have found that to this day im still learning the game.

  2. The lack of decent tutorials really makes learning the game hard, you pretty much have to learn through trial and error or watching youtube videos

3.The multiplayer community is very hostile to novices and will kick you from games if you dont perform which makes it all the harder to have a good time.

8.Dawn Of Andromeda- Dawn Of Andromeda is a game much like stellaris, and master of orion it really feels like a mix of the 2 games, its a fun game and a challenging strategy game, it has a very nice political system, and you can elect governors to your planets similar to how you do in stellaris, but the production chain on the planets for generating resources etc is very similar to Master Of Orion, habitable planets are few and you will not end up with massive empires really quickly its a challenging game, you can pick and make a custom empire with custom traits which adds to the gameplay. It is a fun game and worth a play for anyone who enjoys strategy games.

The Reason that this game has earned spot 8,

  1. Gameplay is still not complete, it can get stale quickly the game doesnt feature many exciting event chains and unlike stellaris doesnt hold the players interest or make you feel like you really want to learn what happened.

2.Game performance is average, game does stutter occasionally, and needs better optimization.

7.Victoria 2-Victoria 2 is a game developed by Paradox the developers of the Stellaris series, Hearts Of Iron Series, and Europa Universalis series, Victoria 2 features a very unique production system, you are able to build factories and produce anything from coffee, to booze, to clothing and it features a interesting government system you can be communist, ban certain people from voting, and much more, The game features, both ground combat and naval combat, you can also colonize new lands that arent owned by any empires, It also has a fantastic taxation system, you can tax each group of people differently, and you can allocate funding to education among other things,

The reasons for its position

1.Rather dated interface, the interface is not bad but it can feel dated and be somewhat difficult to navigate through.

2.No multiplayer, the servers are gone and its pretty much a singleplayer only game, which sucks as it would be a fantastic game to play with friends.

6.Endless Space- Endless Space is massive space strategy game with a rich backstory, and indepth and interesting gameplay, planets have perks and can also have penalties, you can find remains of long dead civilizations, specialize your planets for production, research and a lot more, you can design your own ships, put specific weapons in slots and just build your empire to be what you want, you can play as any number of pre selected races or even customize your own. The diplomacy system and research systems are indepth and a game can take many hours, Endless Space has fantastic art work and it is a beautiful game, And is worth a play for anybody who likes space games.

The Reason for its position

1.Game lags at later stages

2.Steep Learning curve

5.Sid Miers Civilization 4-Civilization 4 is a turn based strategy game, taking place on a huge variety of maps, you can play on maps that feature the earth, islands and a whole lot more, you can play as almost any empire or country that has existed from Rome, to China to Germany, Civilization 4, features land combat, air combat, and sea combat. Civilization 4 features the most wonders of any of the civ games, and units are stackable. Civ 4 is a great game and should be the starting point for anyone getting into the civilization series and the best game in the series.

The Reasons for this position

  1. Outdated Graphics

  2. Slow multiplayer

  3. Steep Learning Curve

  4. Outdated UI

  5. Star Wars Empire At War- SWEAT as its abbreviated LOL, is a real time star wars strategy game featuring a large space map, you battle for control over the galaxy as either the CIS,Republic, Rebel Alliance Empire, or even as a Mercenary faction, The game features indepth space combat over planets and indepth ground battles for control over planets, you can take control over the death star and even vaporize whole planets, you can take control over various heroes and villains and even control Han Solos, Millenium Falcon or even take control over vaders flagship, this is the greatest star wars strategy game that exists and is a must play for any star wars fans. Even to this day despite dated graphics this game is still incredibly fun.

The reason for its position

  1. Dated Gameplay

  2. Lack Of online play

3.Hearts Of Iron 4- Hearts of iron 4 is the latest game in the hearts of iron series, it takes place during ww2, you can play as nearly any country that existed during the time. From the Us, to Japan to Germany, the game features 3 4 main government types, Democratic,Fascist,Communist and Non-Aligned. Each offers a different flavor of gameplay, as a fascist you might be able to recruit a larger army, as a communist you might have better production, as a democracy you might have more political power to do things such as guarantee the independence of another nation, the game features real time, battles for territory, with land forces, navies, airforces, you can even drop paratroopers from planes to invade certain countries. Hearts Of Iron 4 is a must play for any strategy gamer, it features an amazing multiplayer you can have as many as 20 plus people in one game.

The reason for its position

  1. Poor Performance late game

  2. Democracies are essentially worthless early game

2.Stellaris-Stellaris is a 4x Space Strategy game, featuring the ability to completely customize your empire from the ground up, you can pick their name, download mods and change portraits, you can pick governemt type, weapon type, planet type, pick a background and even write one, it allows for some of the most indepth customization in a 4x strategy game ever, it features crazy massive fleet battles, bombardments of planets, ground battles, although you dont actually get to control your forces, you can subjugate enemies, and force pre space flight civilizations to be friends with you, you can infiltrate them. It offers indepth back story ingame, about dead races, fascinating ruins. And a deep government system. You can completely customize your fleet to be what you want it to be.

The reasons for its position

  1. Poor late game performance

  2. Occasional Crashing

  3. Rise Of Nations- RIse of nations is very similar to age of empires, it was made by the same studio, except Rise of nations features gameplay from the stone age to the modern age and into the future. Rise of nations allows you to build an empire, battle it out with any other nation or empire for control over the map, total domination or a whole bunch of different things, it features resource gathering, nations have unique units, naval and land battles are fast paced, you can form alliances with ai or other people, its a classic, the game features a campaign kind of mission deal, and a map maker, you can make your own maps and play on them. Rise of nations is a classic and my all time favorite strategy game, ive been playing it since it originally came out and remember spending long hours on it when i got home from school even using the chat lobby as a social platform just to chat with people.

I hope that you guys enjoyed my list, sorry for the lack of pictures, I didnt have time to get any for this post sadly.
